University of Chicago’s Mansueto Library suffers power outage

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, May 30, 2011

The University of Chicago’s Joe and Rika Mansueto Library was shut down by a power outage for a short time on Saturday, preventing library personnel from providing full services to its patrons.

The US$81 million library, which opened May 16, includes a 180-seat reading room under a 691-panel glass dome. Five stories underground, a system of five cranes retrieves books sorted into bins, carrying a maximum of about 3.5 million volumes. As of 3:50 p.m. CDT, the automated storage and retrieval system, along with staff computers at the circulation desk, were shut down, preventing patrons from retrieving materials stored underground.

The glass ceiling normally allows enough natural light to pass, but rain clouds in the area darkened the room. Patrons began to flip light switches in front of their seats, but to no avail, and a circulation clerk announced that there had been a power outage. Some patrons then moved to the adjacent Regenstein Library, which still had power. Power was still running along the corridor linking Mansueto and Regenstein Libraries, along with the nearby restrooms and Special Collections Research Center.

An electrician arrived at the building at around 3:50 p.m., and power had been restored by 5:45 p.m.

Son of Illinois Senate President charged with driving under the influence

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, April 19, 2010

The son of Illinois Senate President John Cullerton allegedly drove under the influence (DUI) early Sunday morning while using a state-funded vehicle. Local police report that 26-year-old Garritt M. Cullerton was pulled over in downtown Chicago shortly after midnight and registered a blood alcohol level of .188, more than twice the legal limit of .08.

Chicago police spokeswoman Antoinette Ursitti told the local press that Cullerton has been charged with “DUI, negligent driving and improper lane usage.” He is to appear in court on May 26. Senator Cullerton’s office confirmed that his son was driving a 2009 Ford Escape registered to the state Senate, and added that “the Senate President is disappointed that this incident occurred and takes this matter very seriously. He will work to ensure that this does not occur in the future.”

John Cullerton in 2008 sponsored legislation that requires DUI offenders to prove that they are sober by blowing into an electronic device every time they want to start the car. One of the strictest in the country, this law primarily targets first-time offenders.

Crossrail set to only compensate £50 for land rights, London, UK

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, July 22, 2005

The British Parliament approved the first stage of the new Crossrail underground railroad through London as a £15 billion construction project earlier this month. Crossrail is the first major new train line to be built in London in decades.

The rail line being implemented as a hybrid bill in Parliament. After a second reading in Parliament, it was voted upon and decided that the government will commit to the project so that the line will be built.

The next issue before Parliament of to ensure that the implementation of the bill so it is consistent with private interests of neighborhoods to be affected by Crossrail. This is when residents can petition Parliament to change the way the line is constructed.

As a result of construction of the Crossrail line, hundreds of homes will have new tunnels excavated beneath them.

On contacting Crossrail, they have indicated approximately £50 will be offered to each landowner to buy all the land rights-of-way to build the train tunnel more than 9 meters below the residential buildings. The average value for properties in the affected areas is £350,000.

Under UK compulsory purchase laws to be used in this bill, the residents are entitled to the difference in the value of the whole property with and without a tunnel under it. If the offer given by Crossrail is not accepted by any of the residents, the residents can take the case to the Land Tribunal, where the fair value will be established.

This however, could be cost prohibitive. Crossrail does not indicate that it will attempt to assign a fair value in the original offer and instead is only going to offer around £50 per property in the hope that not many people take the matter to the Land Tribunal.

Christian youth camp directors charged with dragging 15-year-old girl behind van

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, August 13, 2007

Charles Eugene Flowers and Stephanie Bassitt, who run Love Demonstrated Ministries in San Antonio, Texas, United States, have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault for tying a girl to their van and dragging her behind it on her stomach.

The victim had stopped running with a group of campers, after falling behind. She says Bassitt yelled at her while Flowers tied her to the van.

The girl was treated for injuries on her stomach, legs and arms. She reported that this was the second assault. Flowers and Bassitt remain in jail on US$100,000 bond each.

Love Demonstrated Ministries is a 32-day Christian boot camp for girls whose parents feel they are “at risk teens”. Such camps have raised controversy before.

An organization called the International Survivors Action Committee maintains a list of U.S. organizations where numerous abusive incidents have been reported; however, their list should not be taken as exhaustive. Neither Love Demonstrated Ministries nor New Horizons Youth Ministries, which has an alumni site describing abuse appeared.

U.S. Congress passes CAFTA with 2 vote House margin

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, July 28, 2005

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) early morning Thursday, with a narrow vote of 217 in favor, 215 against. Voting was held open for an hour, 45 minutes past the House’s 15-minute voting rule as the President along with other supporters lobbied into the night.

The vote was so close, if one House member changed a “Yea” vote to a “Nay” vote, CAFTA would have failed in a 216-216 tie.

In tallying the votes, 25 Republicans, mostly from Midwest Corn Belt and Rust Belt states and the Southeast United States’s textile industrial belt, broke party line to vote against the measure. Two Republicans were present, but refused to vote.

The Democrats presented a more united front. All but 15 Democrats present voted against the treaty. Independent House members, who usually vote with the Democrats also voted against the measure.

Supporters of the measure include President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. Opponents included most House Democrats.

The trade agreement already passed the Senate in June. President Bush has said he will sign it into law.

DR-CAFTA encompasses the following components:

 • Services: all public services are to be open to private investment.
 • Investment: governments promise to grant ironclad guarantees to foreign investment.
 • Government procurement: All government purchases must be open to transnational bids.
 • Market access: governments pledge to reduce and eventually to eliminate tariffs and other measures that protect domestic products.
 • Agriculture: duty-free import and elimination of subsidies on agricultural products.
 • Intellectual property rights: privatization of and monopoly over technological know-how.
 • Antidumping rules, subsidies and countervailing rights: governments commit to phase out protectionist barriers in all sectors.
 • Competition policy: the dismantling of national monopolies.
 • Dispute resolution: the right of transnationals to sue countries in private international courts.
 • Environmental protection: the enforcement of environmental laws and improvement of the environment.
 • Labor standards: the enforcement of the International Labour Organization‘s core labor standards.
 • Transparency: the reduction of government corruption.
 • Test-Data Exclusivity for pharmaceutical corporations

Secrets Of Your Opt In List

Category : Shirts

By Charles Dunbar

Emails have pretty much replaced regular mail. This has happened not only because it is cheaper, since you do not need to buy a stamp, but because its also faster. Emails can be sent in as fast as five seconds, depending on the server, anywhere in the world.

This is no doubt the reason emails are being used to distribute news letters, promotional mails, and other things. How then would you be able to get names & email addresses to send those marketing pieces to your prospects? The answer is: you must have an opt-in list.

An opt-in list is your private directory of names & email address that have subscribed to your specific offering (ie: newsletter, ezine, etc..). Let me point out that I am not endorsing going out and buying names & email addresses of “business opportunity seekers” if you have a business opportunity to promote. Those names typically have been sold to 20 or more people offering business opportunies to the public. It is a waste of money and time. After all, you wouldn’t want to promote your business opportunity to people who were looking for for those 5 years ago, would you? The only “perfect” opt-in lists are the ones that are built from the ground up and only includes individuals that are interested in your offer.

Here are tips on how to create a comprehensive opt-in list for target market.

Your website:

If you need to build a website, it’s very simple nowadays. A lot of programs are milling about assisting regular computer users in making and maintaining websites in a very simple way. Some website creator are so easy that you only need to cut and paste or use one of the website creators’ many templates. There are many web hosting sites are available too. If you have a site of your own, visitors can sign up for you newsletter or ezine via a lead capture page.

Set up a promotion or a freebie:

As we all know, not all the best things in life are free, but you can definitely try to give something out for sure. You see this done all over the web. Free screensavers, free games, free download of programs, free e-book, free secrets of your opt-in lists, etc. And what do they need from you? They just ask for your name and email address. Then you can place a check box on the registration form for sending of email. For sure, you can think of something to give out as well.

Write, write and write some more:

There are many ezines and free article hubs where in writers can submit their articles on various topics. If you had a chance to do so, add a link to your article providing information about what you are trying to promote. Some readers of your article may enjoy your work so much theyd sign up for more information, so dont forget your lead capture page.

Allow them to easily opt-out (if they want):

People who join your opt-in list may, at some time, want to opt-out. People who are wary of joining may not join at all if they see that it would be near impossible to remove their email address from the listing. Show them that it is as easy to opt-out as it is opting in. Ofcourse, all emails sent from your autoresponder system should include an opt-out link so that people can opt-out instantly.

Creating an opt-in list entails a lot of work and/or funds. You should outline how much you are willing spend monthly in creating your opt-in list. Keep in mind that people who opt-in to your list/s are sales prospects. They are interested in a certain product that you may be selling or “free” important information you’re offering. Obtaining an optimal opt-in list will undoubtedly boost your sales.

Do it today and don’t procrastinate. It works!
