Wikinews interviews Buddy Roemer, U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate

U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate and former Governor Buddy Roemer of Louisiana took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Roemer served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1980s as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected governor as a Democrat in 1987 before switching to the Republican Party ahead of the 1991 election for governor. That year, he lost the party’s primary to state legislator David Duke. After his governorship, Roemer worked as CEO of Business First Bank in Baton Rouge.

Roemer announced his candidacy for president back in July after exploring a bid for several months. He has focused his campaign on the issue of campaign finance reform, refusing to accept money from political action committees (PACs) and limiting individual campaign contributions to $100. He raised a total of $126,500 in the third quarter of 2011, far short of the $14.2 million raised by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

For his campaign, Roemer has adopted the slogan ‘Free to Lead’. He rails against corruption, special interests, and money in politics, and has expressed support for the Occupy Wall Street protests. Furthermore, he has taken issue positions in favor of fair trade, a balanced federal budget, and a strengthened national defense.

Roemer has not been invited to any national presidential debates. He has focused largely on the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire, and recently signed up to appear on the state’s primary ballot. However, a recent University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll shows him with less than one percent support in the state. Pearson Cross of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette commented, “If Buddy can exceed expectations in New Hampshire or even sneak in and steal third — that would give a boost that he could build on”.

Australian governments to meet for first COAG meeting of 2006 today

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) will meet in Canberra today for its first meeting of 2006. Members of COAG are the Prime Minister, State Premiers, Australian Capital and Northern Territory Chief Ministers, and the President of the Australian Local Government Association. COAG is chaired by the Prime Minister.

On the agenda is a wide range of issues such as health, economic reform, regulation, and education.

The state leaders (all of whom are members of the Australian Labor Party), met last night to develop a strategy for dealing with John Howard, Australia’s Prime Minister.

Launch of space shuttle Discovery delayed indefinitely

NASA announced during a press conference on Friday night that the agency has decided to delay the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery, which was scheduled for takeoff on February 27. NASA cited the need for additional time to evaluate the shuttle’s hydrogen fuel flow control valves. A new launch date has yet to be scheduled, though NASA is considering mid-March as an option. Another review of Discovery’s flight readiness is scheduled for February 25.

Discovery had originally been scheduled for liftoff on February 12, but NASA wanted to perform additional tests on the valves which control the amount of hydrogen fuel pumped into the external tank when the shuttle is taking off. When Space Shuttle Endeavour went into space in November 2008, one of the valves broke. NASA fears that if one breaks off on this mission, then it could damage the outside of the shuttle.

“We need to complete more work to have a better understanding before flying,” said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. who chaired Friday’s Flight Readiness Review. “We were not driven by schedule pressure and did the right thing. When we fly, we want to do so with full confidence.”

The current scheduled mission, STS-119, is set to fly the Integrated Truss Structure segment (“S” for starboard, the right side of the station, and “6” for its place at the very end of the starboard truss) and install the final set of power-generating solar arrays to the International Space Station. The arrays consist of two 115-foot-long arrays, for a total wing span of 240 feet, including the equipment that connects the two halves and allows them to twist as they track the sun. Altogether, the four sets of arrays can generate 84 to 120 kilowatts of electricity – enough to provide power for more than 40 average homes.

Commander Lee Archambault will lead Discovery’s crew of seven, along with Pilot Tony Antonelli, and Mission Specialists Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Suspected hijackers of Arctic Sea detained by Russian Navy

Reports are emerging that eight people suspected of hijacking the 4,000-tonne Maltese registered vessel MV Arctic Sea have been arrested by the Russian Navy, and are being detained on the frigate Ladny.

Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov confirmed that none of the detainees were members of the crew, and had boarded the vessel after approaching in a small dinghy, “using the threat of arms [and] demanded that the crew follow all of their orders without condition”.

The vessel was found on Sunday off of the Cape Verde Islands, following over a week of searching. The vessel was previously last seen off the coast of France near Brest. There was much speculation as to the whereabouts of the vessel, after it did not arrive in Béjaïa, Algeria as scheduled on August 4, 2009.

The ship is said to be carrying a cargo of Finnish timber that is worth $1.8 million.

According to the Estonian Security Police, among those detained were four Russians who were naturalized Estonian nationals, two Latvians and two Russians.

The free world of capitalism is made up of lenders and borrowers. A lender gives money to a borrower and in return the lender will receive interest from the borrower on each return payment. The lender’s risk comes primarily from the chance that the borrower will not make good on their payments. To hedge this bet, lenders often need reassurances or insurance that the borrower will not default. This is true in almost all the markets of capitalism but is especially true in real estate markets. Often times, the lender in a real estate market, such as a mortgage company or bank, will be confident that the borrower will make their monthly mortgage payments, but will be concerned that the borrower will default on their homeowners insurance or property tax payments.

If a borrower defaults on their homeowners insurance then they will no longer be insured against extreme property damage. If the borrower then has their home burn down, they can easily walk away and the lender will no longer possess collateral on the loan. If the borrower does not make their property tax payments, then the government can put a lien on the home. Both scenarios are a nightmare for the lender. To insure that the borrower makes their insurance and tax payments, both parties will want to set up an escrow account.

An escrow account is where a third party holds the money meant for a payment until the transaction takes place and then the money is released at a prearranged time. A real estate escrow account is maintained by an escrow agent who works for both the lender and the borrower. To help give an example of how an escrow works, let’s say there are two buddies who both make a bet on a football game and they give their money to a third friend to hold on to the money until the game is over and this friend then gives the money to the winner of the bet. This way, both of the parties betting will know that they will get the money they agreed to if they win the bet. Another example of an escrow concept being used is with a vending machine. A person puts money into the machine and the money is held in a figurative ‘waiting area’ until the machine works properly and then drops the money into the coin vault and gives the buyer what he chooses. If the machine does not work properly, then the vender can push a button and the money will come back out at no loss to the buyer.

In the world of real estate an escrow account is vital. If a borrower has one annual property tax payment of 3,000 dollars and an insurance payment of 500 dollars, then there is a great chance that when the time for the payment comes, the borrower will not be able to make the lump sum payment. Therefore, in the mortgage contract, the borrower will make monthly payments to an escrow account which will in turn make the lump sum payment at the due date for the taxes and insurance. In this case, instead of paying $3,500.00 at one time, the borrower will pay a much more manageable $300.00 a month to the third party escrow agent and the agent will make sure the lump sum payment is made on time. Both the lender and the borrower are satisfied because of the added security added to the large mortgage loan.
