Former Scottish Conservatives leader Annabel Goldie to stand down as MSP

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, June 26, 2015

Annabel Goldie, Scottish Conservative Party leader from 2005 to 2011, has announced she will stand down as an MSP at the next elections in 2016. Goldie, who has been an MSP for the West Scotland (previously West of Scotland) electoral region since the Scottish Parliament’s formation in 1999, said she intends to focus on her role in the House of Lords, where she has been a peer since 2013.File:Annabel Goldie.jpg

In a statement today, Goldie said leading the party was an “enormous honour” for her. She also said: “It has afforded me both satisfaction and pleasure to serve my constituents and to serve the parliament and I will look back with great happiness at my time as an MSP. I am grateful to friends and colleagues from all parties for their support. Sometimes we found common ground, sometimes we disagreed but never I hope with rancour nor disrespect. Politics is a rough trade but we have built a strong parliament in Scotland of which we can all be rightly proud.” She said because of Ruth Davidson, her successor as Scottish Conservative leader, the party is now “in fine fettle and stands a great chance of making real progress in the years ahead,” concluding by saying: “I look forward to continuing to work as part of that effort in the House of Lords in the years to come.”

Davidson responded to the news by calling Goldie an “unstoppable force”, adding: “She has been an inspiration to a whole generation of Scottish Conservatives, and she has been a tremendous mentor, support and friend to me. In Holyrood, she has fostered both affection and respect from all members – regardless of their political affiliation – and her retirement from the Scottish Parliament will leave an Annabel-sized hole which won’t ever quite be filled. She is unique.” Meanwhile, David Cameron, UK Conservative leader and UK Prime Minister, said: “Annabel is one of those rare breeds in Scottish politics, somebody known by her first name alone. When she was Scottish Conservative leader, I valued her sage advice. She has been a towering strength to our party in Scotland, a doughty debater in the TV studios and Scottish Parliament and has one of the sharpest wits around. I wish her a long and happy retirement after 17 years unstinting service at Holyrood – but look forward to seeing her on the red benches of the Lords for years to come.”

In Holyrood, she has fostered both affection and respect from all members – regardless of their political affiliation – and her retirement from the Scottish Parliament will leave an Annabel-sized hole which won’t ever quite be filled. She is unique.

Goldie, the Scottish Conservatives’ first ever female leader, was elected unopposed. She took up the role in the aftermath of David McLetchie’s resignation from the role in an expenses usage controversy and subsequent resignation of Brian Monteith from his Conservative whip role in the Scottish Parliament for briefing the media against him. Meanwhile, as Scottish Conservatives won 18 seats in the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and 2003, the party had been less successful in UK general elections in Scotland; Conservatives went up from zero out of a possible 72 UK MPs in Scotland in 1997 to one in 2001. This led to Goldie remarking in her inaugural speech in 2005 that: “The wheels are back on the wagon – and I’m the nag hitched up to tow it.” She also said: “The party is still way ahead of where it was in 1997. And my first task is to take it forward to 2007.” However, under Goldie’s leadership, the number of seats the Scottish Conservatives won in the Scottish Parliament slightly decreased from 18 in 2003 to 17 in 2007 and to 15 in 2011. At the same time, the number of Conservative MPs stood at one out of a possible 59 after the 2010 UK general election.

In the aforementioned 2005 speech, she also said the party could be trusted with devolution in Scotland, adding: “making devolution work better means real devolution: not the lumbering and cripplingly expensive array of government departments, government advisers, consultants, quangos, quasi-quangos and agencies with all their expensive appendages, but devolving down to people and their communities, their right to make their own decisions about their lives, how for example they procure healthcare and how they educate their children.” Goldie would go on to sit on the advisory board for the Smith Commission, which was set up to examine which further political powers should be devolved to Scotland following the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. More recently, Goldie supported a reduction in the voting age for Scottish Parliament elections from 18 to 16 in a vote earlier this month, commenting: “I think it is an opportunity for them to continue their high level of engagement in topical affairs that we saw with the independence referendum.”

Goldie, a member of the Salvation Army’s West of Scotland Advisory Board and a Church of Scotland elder, is not the only Scottish Conservative MSP intending to stand down in 2016. Mary Scanlon, Gavin Brown, Alex Fergusson and Nanette Milne all reportedly intend to leave the Scottish Parliament next year.

Judge suspends California High School Exit Exam requirement

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, May 12, 2006As expected, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert Freedman today issued a preliminary injunction stopping the state from requiring would-be high school graduates to pass the California High School Exit Exam, but the state superintendent of schools said he would try to overturn Freedman’s ruling.

Just before 2 p.m. PDT, Freedman announced his decision in his Oakland courtroom.

On Monday, Freedman announced his tentative decision to stop the state from requiring students to pass the test, but withheld his final decision until today to give lawyers in the case time to make further arguments.

In his statement, Freedman said state school officials “are enjoined and restrained from denying any high school senior who is a member of a 2006 graduating class and who is otherwise eligible to graduate and receive a diploma from participating in graduation exercises and receipt of such diploma solely on the ground that such student has not passed all parts” of the exam.

The ruling effects 47,000 seniors statewide, about 11 percent of the class of 2006, who have yet to pass both the English and math sections of the exam.

At James Logan High School, about 70 students are effected.

In the case, Valenzuela vs. O’Connell, lawyers for the plaintiffs argued that their clients were denied equal opportunity to pass the test, as they are not offered equal educational opportunities in California schools because of their non-English primary language backgrounds or their low economic status. The students represented face not graduating despite meeting all requirements for graduation except passage of the test,

Freedman agreed, at least in part. In his decision, he said: “There is evidence in the record that shows that students in economically challenged communities have not had an equal opportunity to learn the materials tested on the (California High School Exit Examination).”

Originally, the case involved 10 students and their families, but since its filing in February, four of the students have passed the test, leaving six students as parties to the case.

“I’m greatly disappointed in today’s court decision to halt the California High School Exit Exam as a graduation requirement for the Class of 2006,” said State Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell. “This is not only a great disappointment to me, it is a setback for students and hard-fought school accountability in the state of California.”

“The preliminary injunction against California’s Exit Exam denies the vast majority of students in the Class of 2006 the opportunity to graduate with diplomas that certify mastery of essential skills in reading and math,” he said.

“We will continue to fight the case,” said O’Connell, “I have directed our attorneys to immediately appeal this ruling, and to seek a stay of the judge’s order.”

O’Connell wrote the law requiring the test as a state legislator in 1999.

“I applaud Superintendent O’Connell for his decision to appeal the ruling issued today delaying the California High School Exit Exam graduation requirement,” said California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. “He has my full support in his efforts to secure the exam’s implementation this year. I stand behind the exit exam because it is our best resource for ensuring that schools are giving our children the knowledge and the skills they need to begin successful lives.”

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Mauritanian refugees begin returning home from Senegal

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Mauritanian refugees stuck in Senegal for nearly two decades after fleeing ethnic clashes in their home country have begun returning to Mauritania under a U.N.-sponsored program. But many do not want to return.

There were goodbye ceremonies and welcoming ceremonies attended by officials on both sides of the Senegal River as more than 100 former refugees were ferried on motorized pirogues.

A spokesman for the United Nations refugee agency, Alphonse Munyaneza, explained international funding will help pay for resettlement.

“Each refugee returning back to Mauritania will receive a piece of land equivalent to 140 square meters for establishing a house. UNHCR and the government of Mauritania will provide construction material so that they can build a house,” explained Munyaneza. “We will provide three months of food ration. We will provide a tent also.”

Each refugee returning back to Mauritania will receive a piece of land equivalent to 140 square meters for establishing a house.

Mauritanian refugee children broke out in song and laughter when officials arrived at their camps close to the border to get the process going.

There are more than 20,000 Mauritanian refugees in Senegal. Officials say the return program will extend over 18 months.

One of those happy to go is Haddy Sy. She says she left Mauritania after she was beaten up. This took place during a wave of ethnic violence that began in Arab Moor-dominated Mauritania in 1989 and escalated into border clashes, forcing tens of thousands of black, mostly ethnic Fula, Mauritanians into exile.

In the late 1990s, more than 30,000 refugees returned by their own means and some U.N. assistance.

Sy says she is leaving behind many good things in Senegal, including a peaceful setting, but that she is still happy to return to her home country.

Since taking office last year, the government of the elected, post-coup President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi has been making efforts to bring home the refugees, including several thousand more in Mali.

But many in Senegal do not want to return home, like Yaraah Sow, who lives in the Dagana refugee camp about 400 kilometers northwest of Dakar.

He says he is still very bitter about what happened nearly 20 years ago. He said his father, who was a civil servant, was attacked by a mob and died of internal bleeding at the gates of a hospital after doctors refused to treat him.

Sow accuses the military of seizing all his family’s property. He says that two of his younger brothers died on the trip to Senegal. He says his children are now going to school and that they are better off in Senegal.

One of the refugee leaders, Mohamed Ali Sow, who left when he was 10, says he is studying at a university in Senegal to become a lawyer to defend the rights of chased out Mauritanians.

He says the return program has been rushed, because he says people who had their property seized, houses burned, and jobs taken away, should have guarantees these will be restored. He says until then, he does not think it is wise to go back.

A compilation of brief news reports for Saturday, December 20, 2008.

The United States government has announced that it will give US$17.4 billion in loans to help three of the nation’s automobile makers – Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford – avoid bankruptcy.

The money will be taken from the $700 billion bailout package originally intended to rescue US banks. General Motors will get $9.4 billion and Chrysler $4 billion before next year. Ford stated that it wants to get by without government aid.

President George Bush said that it would not be “a responsible course of action” to allow the companies to collapse.

The Presence Of Health And Safety Training Courses Online

Category : School

Most governments make it mandatory for businesses, and organizations to conduct health and safety training for their employees. Undergoing the training makes it possible for employers, authorities, and their staff to implement safe practices in workplace and respond immediately and effectively if an accident or health hazard occurs. The training not only helps when occupational hazards or problems such as fire or earthquake hits but also assists in maintaining practices which would ensure safety in the work place or anywhere else.

The lessons taught in the health and safety training varies from course to course. The basic courses give training on basic safety and healthy practices and how to follow them. Other courses provide guidance on areas such as health and safety legislation, fire, first aid, food safety, manual handling etc which would range over all sectors of work. The fire training usually involves responding to fire alarms, using fire extinguishers and other means of extinguishing fire, training classes for fire marshals and fire wardens and information on the methods which would help prevent fire.

First aid courses in health and safety traininginclude recognizing and providing primary care for sudden illness and injuries so as to maintain the person stable till medical personnel arrives on the scene. It would also include performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) on adults. Other courses include emergency evacuation, hazard communication, management of hazardous waste, laboratory safety, electrical safety, tool safety, bio safety etc. Depending up on your occupation and needs you can apply for the courses, though basic health and safety training(which provides guidance on healthy practices, practicing safety etc) would be mandatory for all employees.

You could find many health and safety training courses online. The applicability of these courses would depend on your own requirement as well as what you already know. For example many centers offer courses such as alarm response, bio safety, office orientation, electrical safety, earthquake safety emergency procedures, refresher courses etc online. These may include learning materials which do not require practical training (unlike classes such as first aid, fire warden, and material handling). Some of these courses may require prior training. The requirements vary from course to course.

Australian TV network sprung fabricating live crosses by rival

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Australia’s Nine Network has issued an apology after the rival Seven Network caught Nine News fabricating live crosses to the search site for murdered schoolboy Daniel Morcombe. The network issued a statement after Saturday and Sunday’s Nine News bulletins in Brisbane, which featured presenter Eva Milic crossing “live” to the site with the caption: “Near Beerwah”.

The rival Seven Network, based nearby, lifted the lid on the scam after filming the Nine News chopper almost 100 kilometres south of Beerwah – on the helipad outside the studio, with lights on and blades in motion while Cameron Price reported from inside. Nine admitted to faking Sunday’s cross; issuing a statement on Monday blaming bad weather.

“Our chopper was forced to divert from Beerwah due to bad weather, and air control instructed them to touch down,” it read.

The network also told media industry website mUmBRELLA that “the producer was unaware until it was too late to abort or delay the cross”.

Doubts have been cast over the truth of this statement, however, as it has since emerged that the chopper was also absent from Beerwah on Saturday, and was in fact circling Brisbane’s western suburbs during Melissa Mallet’s report. Director of Queensland Seven News, Rob Raschke, questioned the merit of Nine’s claims, telling Brisbane’s Courier-Mail, “the idea of not knowing where a $3 million helicopter is defies belief”.

A revised statement yesterday announced a Nine investigation into why the location of the helicopter was misreported on both nights, describing the situation as “unacceptable”.

Woman strikes lucky betting on Champions League football

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, September 24, 2007

A woman found herself £226,000 richer, one the biggest ever payouts to a female client, after placing a series of bets on last weeks Champions League games, despite knowing nothing about football.

Kathrin Rotmann, 33, placed a £1,000 bet based on her tactics of supporting “teams that are strong and winning”.

“I am delighted. I only ever bet on football — last year I won £35,000 with one bet. I just keep a track of those teams which are playing well and bet on them. It was very exciting when the results went my way.”

She was delighted when she saw her bet multiply in front of her eyes, when her 226-1 odds of wins for Arsenal, Man United, Rangers, Slavia Prague, Barcelona, Roma, Fenerbahce and PSV come in on television.

The exact amount won was £226,834.36.

Top 4 Mobile Apps On Casino Games For Android &Amp; I Os

Category : Betting

One of the most significant advantages of using an online casino is convenience; you can play your favourite casino games anywhere with an internet connection.

Nowadays, more and more people are doing the majority of their internet browsing from mobile devices. If a company’s website isn’t optimized for mobile, they’ll be missing out on a large chunk of revenue.

The same can be said for mobile casino gaming. Thanks to advancing technology, mobile apps can offer online casino players a more intuitive, streamlined, and immersive experience than ever from the convenience of a mobile device.

Some casinos offer dedicated apps to download whereas others have designed their websites to be responsive and adapt to mobile devices.

The casinos with the best mobile apps gain a big advantage over their competitors and offer a more enjoyable experience.

This article highlights the casino with the best mobile apps that have been included on Casino.Guide, which is the place to go for Canadian players who want an in-depth guide for online casinos.

1. LeoVegas Casino

When LeoVegas was initially launched in 2012, it was already very mobile-focused and, as a result, quickly became one of the top mobile gaming sites on the internet. In 2019, the company was crowned Mobile Casino Operator of the year and has won various other awards in the mobile gaming sector.

In 2021, LeoVegas still provide one of the highest-quality mobile casino experiences available. You can play LeoVegas directly in a web browser, thanks to their mobile-responsive design. The HTML5 browser version will work across all devices, but you can also download their dedicated mobile apps on both iOS and Android devices.

The LeoVegas mobile apps present a lightweight, streamlined gameplay experience with a vast library of games from various top providers like NetEnt and Microgaming. The mobile apps have a slightly reduced game library than the browser version, but this is done to reduce storage requirements, and the selection is still vast.

Overall, LeoVegas delivers one of the best online casino experiences you could have on your mobile device, which should be expected from a company that has always had a forward-thinking mobile-first approach.

2. Mr Green Casino

The Mr Green Casino has become known for hosting an incredible variety of games from the industry’s top software providers. Some casinos only use games from a handful of software developers, which can be very limiting. However, at Mr Green, you’ll find the best games from all of the most well-known developers. Best of all, you can play every one of these games on your mobile devices.

Mr Green Casino has an HTML5 version of their desktop site that offers a more streamlined but robust way to play their entire game library on all devices.

If you’d prefer to play inside dedicated apps for your smartphone, Mr Green has that too, with iOS and Android apps available to download. The apps’ key advantage is they give you the chance to set alerts and have each been optimized for their specific devices.

Unfortunately, you don’t get the entire library on the iOS or Android app, which is the case with most mobile casino apps. Nevertheless, the selection is still broad, and Mr Green is excellent at keeping their apps up to date with the latest games and features.

If it is a vast selection of top-quality games you’re looking for, Mr Green Casino will not disappoint you.

3. NetBet Casino

NetBet is slightly different from the previous casinos on our list because it doesn’t have a dedicated mobile app that you can download. However, their mobile browser app is so good, NetBet had to be included on the list.

The exception is Poker, which has a dedicated app from NetBet, which players must download for free.

You can play all of the other games across all mobile devices on NetBet’s mobile version of the website. Many mobile sites end up being clunky, difficult to navigate, and hard to read, but NetBet’s site is quite the opposite.

The HTML5 website is simple to navigate with clear buttons and text so you can find your favourite games with ease. Some of the games have even been redesigned with mobile-specific features.

Another feather in NetBet’s mobile-friendly cap is their selection of live-dealer games, which are just as crisp on mobile as they are on desktop. You can immerse yourself in live games of Blackjack and roulette from anywhere with an internet connection.

It is worth mentioning that NetBet also has Sports betting, which you can do via mobile devices. Unlike their casino games, the sports betting side of NetBet does have dedicated apps for iOS and Android.

Sportsbetting aside, NetBet brings players a clean and user-friendly way to play all the traditional casino games online, even without dedicated apps, when it comes to mobile casinos.

4. Boom Casino

Like NetBet, Boom Casino doesn’t have an app to download and is available across all devices directly from your mobile browser. Again, the site is built on HTML5, which is becoming the standard for mobile casinos due to how user-friendly it is.

Boom Casino is well-known for having a massive collection of games. To give you an idea of the numbers, there are over 2,000 slot games with new ones being added each week, and you can play all of them on your mobile devices.

Of course, there are also plenty of traditional table games like Blackjack and Roulette if those are your preference. Also, you can access the live versions of these table games from your mobile. However, the live games will eat your mobile data, so it is best to play live-dealer games via WiFi when possible.

When it comes to the website itself, Boom Casino is very smooth on all mobile devices. Even though the library is filled with thousands of games, it is easy to navigate through.

The games themselves look and sound fantastic. Sleek graphics and crisp audio make the experience just as much fun as on a desktop.
