Former science director sues Texas over intelligent design e-mail

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Christine Comer, former director of the science curriculum for the Texas Education Agency (TEA), is suing the Commissioner Robert Scott for wrongful dismissal. Comer alleges that she was “illegally fired for forwarding an e-mail about a lecture that was critical of the teaching of intelligent design in science classes.” Her suit alleges she was “terminated for contravening an unconstitutional policy” which required “employees to be neutral on the subject of creationism – the biblical interpretation of the origin of humans.”

The Dallas Morning News reported, “The policy was in force even though the federal courts have ruled that teaching creationism as science in public schools is illegal under U.S. Constitution’s provision preventing government establishment or endorsement of religious beliefs.” Among Comer’s supporters is Philosopher and National Center for Science Education speaker Barbara Forrest who was the presenter at the lecture Comer mentioned in the email.

News 8 Austin reported, “The TEA was not available for comment late Wednesday.”

Why Malpractice Insurance Is Important For Medical Professionals

Category : Insurance

If you are one of the many busy medical professionals working today, you owe it to protect yourself from any malpractice. Having medical malpractice insurance will protect you and give you peace of mind if you are involved in any type of lawsuit.

A good example is a friend who was once to be an owner of a major hospital in Agana Memorial hospital located in Agana, Guam.

He and a couple of his co-physicians were in the process of doing a heart surgery. Unfortunately, the patient died while they were in the middle of the actual surgery. They tried their best to save the life of that patient but, it was too late for him to be revived.

The patient was pronounced dead and the family was informed of what happened. A couple of months after the incident happened, and my friend received a letter from a lawyer in regards to a lawsuit from the bereaved family. They were asking for $5 million dollars for settlement. My friends malpractice insurance at that time only covered for the amount of $1 million. He lost the case and ended up selling his share at the hospital. He was under a great deal of pressure to raise the money that he needed to cover the rest of the required funds.

To make a long story short, if he had been covered for more than a million by malpractice insurance, then perhaps he may have not had to suffer that situation. He could have been one of the owners of the hospital and would be receiving monthly income from the hospital. But he lost everything including his share at hospital. He needed to sell everything to pay the settlement. It is very unfortunate to have that type of situation especially if you have a family and your kids are still young. This could have been avoided if he had enough medical malpractice insurance coverage to cover everything. Thats why I believe that it is in your best interest to have the maximum amount of medical malpractice insurance while you are still active in any medical field. You never know when one of your patients might decide that you didnt provide adequate care.It is also recommended to deal with a reliable insurance company who specializes in this type of coverage. There are many insurance carriers to deal with, but working with a reputable company will ensure that you will be covered in the event of any medical malpractice.

Former Japanese princess Mako Komuro moves to New York with commoner husband

Monday, November 15, 2021

Mako Komuro and her husband, Kei Komuro, travelled to New York yesterday to start a new life together outside of the Japanese Royal Family. Their relationship had been heavily criticized by members of the public in Japan due to its unconventional nature and breaking social norms for the nation. The couple arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport to much media attention and under heavy security.

Mako Komuro, a former princess and niece of the Japanese emperor, gave up her title in order to marry Kei Komuro, her college sweetheart. While Japan is generally modern in many ways, the status of women and family values are still rooted in feudal practices; Japanese royalty are forbidden from marrying “commoners”.

New York was chosen because Kei has a job at a New York law firm, though he has yet to pass the New York bar exam. According to the Associated Press, this fact was used by Japanese media to discredit and attack him, despite it being common place to not pass a bar exam on the first attempt. Comparisons have been drawn by The Straits Times between scrutiny that they have suffered and that of the Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex of the British royal family.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper may not have dropped the writ for an election yet, but his party is airing advertisements on both television and radio.

Because the election is not yet official — though it is scheduled for October 19, 2009 and could be held as soon as October of this year — the ads do not count against the Conservative Party’s campaign spending limit. They have been airing since Thursday.

The advertisement includes various Canadians making statements about Harper, as opposed to the Conservative platform. One woman shown in a parking lot says that she likes “the idea that he’s a family man with young children.”

The Canadian Press notes that all four major party leaders are married and have children.

Other statements include “[h]e’s doing a good job,” “I’ve never been so proud to be Canadian,” “[h]e’s on the right track” and “I like him.”

Political communication expert Jonathan Rose of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Ontario told the Canadian Press: “By relying on typical Canadians in the ads, the Conservatives are hoping that the voter will find the connection powerful. Unfortunately, these kind of ads are based on assertions, not arguments. There is no evidence given to support the claims made in them.”

A writer for {{w|The Gazette (Montreal)|The Montreal Gazette]] comments that, “at the end, it’s hard to tell whether Stephen Harper is trying to smile or grimacing with the effort to convey warmth.”

The Conservative Party ads are airing during children’s programming, amongst other air times, presumed to be an attempt to reach parents.

Gazette writer Elizabeth Thompson noted that her daughter had seen one of the ads during an airing of SpongeBob SquarePants on television station YTV. Thompson criticized the choice to air the ads in the time slot, after her daughter repeated the ad claims “matter-of-factly”.

SpongeBob SquarePants was shown in a recent poll to be watched by 24 percent of parents with their child. About 41 percent of YTV’s audience is above the age of majority, and 68 percent of its reach composition, according to fall 2007 statistics by BBM Nielsen Media Research.

Sunflower oil saves at-risk newborns from infection

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, March 5, 2005Simply massaging low birth weight babies with sunflower seed oil can protect them from potentially fatal infections.

Infections and complications from preterm birth cause more than half of all neonatal deaths, and very low birth weight babies are particularly vulnerable.

Preterm babies have immature skin that lacks a protective film called vernix that has antimicrobial properties.

In some countries, such as India, newborns are routinely massaged with mustard oil.

But mustard oil, says Gary Darmstadt of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, can delay recovery of the skin barrier and have a toxic effect on skin.

Seeking an alternative low-cost product, Darmstadt and colleagues experimented with sunflower oil and an ointment called Aquaphor that comprises petrolatum, mineral oil, mineral wax and lanolin.

The researchers tested the treatments on 497 newborns (72 hours old or less) and preterm babies (less than 33 weeks gestation) between 1998 and 2003 in Bangladesh.

They applied the treatments to the entire body besides the scalp and face three times daily for the first 14 days and then twice daily until discharge.

Babies treated with sunflower oil were found 41% less likely to develop infections than controls.

“Evidence is emerging that the skin is much more important as a barrier to infection than previously recognized, particularly in preterm infants whose skin is underdeveloped,” says Darmstadt. “The good news is that treatment is available to strengthen the function of the skin as a barrier in these vulnerable newborns.”

Reasons Why Grooming Your Dog Is Good For You And The Dog

Category : Dog Supplements

Bonding experience

Your dog is more than your pet, and the best way of improving the bond between the two of you is by dog grooming. Grooming allows you to spend more time with the dog, which gives you more time to bond. Your canine will end up trusting you more and will be more relaxed around you. This is great if the dog is anxious, but you have to remember that the bond may not grow instantly. You have to keep grooming the dog frequently and be patient as you wait for him/her to be comfortable with you.

Improved health

Dog grooming doesn’t just improve the visual appearance of your dog, but it also helps improve health. Your chances of spotting any injuries or unnatural spots are increased when you two have close contact. For instance, you will notice any gum problems when you brush the dog’s teeth, and you’ll find a solution sooner, which saves you from having to deal with the pain and discomfort you would have dealt with if the problem would have gone hidden for longer. It’s easier for abrasions and growths to remain hidden under the canine’s fur, and the best way of discovering them is by checking regularly. This doesn’t have to replace visits to the vet. It just reduces them and helps you get peace and save money in the long run.

Sanitation

Keeping your dog clean plays a role in keeping your entire house clean. You’ll be maintaining good hygiene for both you and the dog. Over time the dog is bound to collect excess oil, dirt, and old fur, which you can easily get rid of by simple dog grooming routines. You’ll allow the dog to grow new and healthy fur easily. Remember to pay attention to the dog’s genes. Some dogs grow fur faster than others, which means you’ll need to brush them more regularly. Grooming them yourself will help save money on professional pet groomers.

Better appearance

Dogs that are groomed regularly are more appealing than those that aren’t. The way your dog looks affects you and those around you psychologically, even if you don’t realize it. For most people, an un-kept dog represents terror, but a kept one is more friendly. Spending some time dog grooming makes it easier for your dog to socialize with other people as well as other animals. Keeping the nails short also prevents them from getting attached and damaging your stuff.

Summary

Dog grooming has these benefits and more. You get to keep your dog smelling fresh, and you get to save money on veterinary visits and professional pet groomers. You may have to spend some money on the right essential grooming tools, but you’ll end up saving more in the end. Other people will love your dog, and you’ll have a closer relationship.

French Workers stay at home for Whit Monday

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, May 16, 2005

In France, workers by the millions stayed at home during the Whit Monday holiday despite the government’s cancellation of the traditional Pentecost public holiday. Some acted in defiance of the government’s decision, while some took leave or were put on forced leave by their employers due to uncertainties of public transportation.

Following the 2003 heat wave, which caused the deaths of an estimated 13,000 elderly people in France, the administration of prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has proposed the suppression of one day of public holiday in order to use the supplemental generated tax for a fund for the caring of the elderly.

Whit Monday was selected because, in normal years, France has several public holidays in May. Furthermore, attendance of religious celebrations is low, so holidays of a religious origin are nowadays generally mere family reunions.

However, the reception of this new working day was mixed. The administration says it promotes solidarity with the elderly. Trade unions and opposition groups argue that the measure is an ill-conceived stunt aimed at hiding the government’s bad handling of the problems of the elderly.

For instance, many remember that in 1956, the government created a tax (the vignette) on motor vehicles, allegedly for funding measures for the elderly. But in 1973, the products of this tax came, as any other tax, into the government’s general fund.

With this measure, the French government intends to raise 2 billion to be donated to a new public establishment, the “national fund for solidarity for autonomy.” The new fund would be chartered to deal with losses of self-sufficiency of elderly or handicapped people. 1.2 billion € are earmarked for elderly people, 0.8 for the handicapped.

Trade unions had called for strikes in urban public transportation and paralyzed traffic in 27 cities, including Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Montpellier ou Strasbourg. However, SNCF (the national railway operator) did not strike and RATP (the Paris transportation authority) suffered only minor disturbances, though both are normally known for their frequent and disturbing strikes.

SNCF considered the day as a holiday for payroll purposes and instead increased the work day by 1’52”, a measure that majority leader Nicolas Sarkozy considered shocking and contrary to the objectives of the government.

The protests are also widely considered to be motivated by the unpopularity of the administration of president Jacques Chirac and prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Recent statistics show a five year-high for unemployment at 10.2%.

This discontent may result in a majority of “no” in the vote for the ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe.

Cloned cattle’s milk and meat seem safe, according to new study

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

A National Academy of Sciences report (.pdf) last year said that while the milk and meat from cloned animals would not likely make anyone sick, more research should be performed. Now, a new US-Japan study published in the April 11 online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says that milk and meat from cloned cattle does indeed appear to meet industry standards and appears to be safe for human consumption.

As BBC News reports, the scientists, led by Professor Jerry Yang from the University of Connecticut, compared the produce from two beef and four dairy clones, all derived from a single Holstein dairy cow and a single Japanese black bull, with the produce from normal animals of similar age and breed.

The meat was analysed against more than 100 physiological, tissue and cellular components, while the milk was analysed for protein, fat and other variables. No significant differences between the produce of cloned and normal cattle were found. Higher levels of fat and fatty acids were found in the cloned cow meat, but they still fell within beef industry standards.

While the study showed the cloned produce to be within the range approved for human consumption, the scientists stressed that the research was still in its early stages. Their findings, they said, provide “guidelines” for further research with larger numbers of clones from different genetic backgrounds.

Cloning livestock may one day increase yields by copying those animals that are especially productive and especially resistant to disease.

“The milking production levels in the US are three to four times higher than levels in China; maybe even five times or more compared to cows in India and some other countries,” Professor Jerry Yang told BBC News. “Therefore cloning could offer technology for duplicating superior farm animals. However, all the products from these cloned animals must be safe for human consumption. …and it is a major issue for scientists to provide a scientific basis for the data and information to address this question.”

As USA Today reports, there is currently no law governing the sale of meat or milk from the estimated 1,000 to 2,000 cloned farm animals in the USA. But since 2003, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked producers to voluntarily keep the meat and milk of these animals, and that of their offspring, out of the food supply.

Wired News reports that companies like ViaGen and Cyagra, which offer livestock-cloning services, have also been waiting for several years for a final say from the FDA.

“For the United States agricultural industry, (cloning) can reduce the number of cows necessary for milking,” said Jerry Yang “They can have a pleasant environment and produce even more milk.” He also said that cloning cattle from the United States, where genetic breeding is more advanced, could save developing countries 50 years of breeding.

The idea of cloning animals for human consumption is not without its critics. First, there are the welfare concerns, as most cloned animals do not make it to term before being born, and many of those that do are born deformed or prone to illness. The Humane Society of the United States has asked for a ban on milk and meat from clones for just this reason. Second, there is still the concern that healthy clones may have subtle defects that could make their food products unsafe to eat.

As the Washington Post reports, some critics are asking why it is necessary to clone cows that produce huge amounts of milk when surpluses, rather than shortages, are the main problem facing the U.S. dairy industry today.

Tips To Help Your Pet Beat The Heat This Summer South Africa

Category : Pet Supplies

Summertime means going on outings, picnics, and having fun with your furry companions. But, along with all the fun, comes great challenges to keep your pets safe from the soaring temperatures and heatwaves. While nothing should stop you from having fun with your beloved pets this summer, your pet’s safety should be your topmost priority as extreme heat can cause serious problems such as dehydration and heatstroke in pets.

If you don’t want to ruin your and your pets’ summer fun, here are some tips to help them beat the heat this summer:

  • Make sure your pet has plenty of water to drink and that their water bowls are never empty. You can also try keeping multiple water bowls in the house to give them more chances to stay hydrated and drink enough water.
  • Water is very essential in summer, but so are vitamins and electrolytes to maintain hydration. For that, you can make them ice popsicles. They would absolutely love to devour such icy treats on a hot summer afternoon. To make these treats more nutritious, you can add small pieces of your pet’s favorite fruits as well.
  • Limit their direct exposure to the sun. Avoid going out while the sun is above their head. Plan their walks and exercise schedules in the early morning or late evening when the weather is comparatively cooler.
  • Your pet’s paws are quite sensitive. You may not feel the heat on the sand or floor or metal because of your footwear but since our fur buddies walk with bare paws, do not forget to check the temperature of the ground before letting them play or walk.
  • If your pet is an outdoorsy guy, and loves relaxing in the backyard or garden, provide them with shades or tents where they can rest in a cool place.
  • Never leave your pet in a parked car for long on a hot sunny day. Even if your pet is trained to stay in the car for hours, the temperature in the car is much hotter in summer and can lead to brain damage in pets.
  • If you are taking your pets out along with you, carry an extra water bottle for them. Whether it is a walk or a drive, don’t forget to carry their bowls and water with you.
  • Just like us humans, pets tend to gain weight in winters. However, excess weight is not good for your pet’s health especially when it is hot out there. Summer is the best time to shed those extra kilos so you can increase their level of exercise during this period. This will not only help them get back in shape but will also keep them active and improve their overall health.
  • Pay more attention to their grooming. Just basic grooming like regular bathing and hair-cut can help them feel more fresh and clean during summers. Also, summer is the time to get your pet a cool new haircut but avoid complete shave downs. Your pet’s fur keeps their body naturally cool and by shaving their fur you are interfering with their body’s natural regulation.
  • Summer is the perfect season to have a splashing good time. Your pet will definitely enjoy summertime even more if you provide them with a pool in your backyard or take them to beaches. It will not only help them beat the heat, but it can also be a wonderful time for you to create memories with them!
  • During summer, your pet’s skin is susceptible to sunburn, but using the right sunscreen will help protect them. Invest in a decent sunscreen for your pet and incorporate it into their everyday rest!
  • Most importantly, protect your pets from pesky pests such as fleas, ticks, lice, mosquitoes, and worms, which are a major nuisance to pets during the summer as this seasonal change promotes their proliferation. Call your vet today and consult him for the best suitable preventive treatments for your pet.

Keep your pets cool while having a blast and have a wonderful summer, you all!Dont Forget to buy Pet Supplies This summer:-

Highway bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapses

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, August 2, 2007

The Interstate 35W Mississippi River eight-lane bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has collapsed on both sides of the highway over the Mississippi River during rush hour.

Previous reports indicated at least nine people had died, but Minneapolis police revised this to four during a 7:30 a.m. (local time) press conference. Tim Dolan, the Minneapolis Police Chief later stated that “several [adding to the four] people are confirmed dead at the scene,” but would not elaborate on how many. At least 79 have been injured and at least 8 are still missing, still believed to be in the rubble.

The road was busy with bumper-to-bumper traffic in four lanes when the entire 1907 foot (581 m) steel arch bridge collapsed. At least 50 cars were traveling on the bridge, including a school bus. The Red Cross said that 60 children were aboard a school bus, and that ten of those were admitted to a hospital.

The entire length of the bridge over the river collapsed at 6:05 p.m. CDT (UTC-5). The bridge, built in 1967, cleared the water level by 64 feet; the deck surface and pavement were considerably higher.

Reports say that people may be trapped in the water. Further, “many voids may contain survivors, but we cannot search those voids until it’s safe,” said Jim Clack, Minneapolis Fire Chief, during a press conference.

“One has died from drowning,” said a doctor from the medical center during an 8:00 pm press conference, who also said that so far 22 are in “yellow condition” and at least six are in “critical condition.”

Minneapolis officials have stated during an earlier press conference that “people are being sent downtown and all survivors are off the bridge. We are seeking help from the Red Cross.” and “[…]at least 60 children are receiving trauma care some with severe injures, some with minor injuries.”

Most of the injured have been received by Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis for medical treatment. Area hospitals are requesting all off duty staff and all Minneapolis ambulances to report. Residents are being encouraged to stay away from the area to let emergency crews do their work.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but there was construction being performed on the bridge’s road surface which included the use of jackhammers and the FBI has ruled out terrorism.

“Although it is much too early to make any determination of the cause, we have no reason at this time to believe there is any nexus to terrorism,” said Paul McCabe, an FBI spokesman.

In 2001 a stress inspection was done and Minnesota Department of Transportation stated that the bridge “should not have any problems with fatigue cracking in the foreseeable future.”

Typically an eight-lane bridge, the bridge was reduced to four lanes (two in each direction) during the current construction. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had just announced overnight lane reductions on the bridge to one lane in each direction for the late evening hours of July 31 and August 1.
