The trial of Saddam Hussein

On November 5, 2006, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging.

The charges relate to the reprisal killings of 148 people, following a failed assassination attempt on Saddam Hussein in 1982 in the town of Dujail.

The year-long trial saw witnesses, including a former Iraqi intelligence officer who investigated the assassination attempt, testify of imprisonment, torture and the execution of 148 villagers. Documents and a recording of a telephone conversation were presented linking Saddam with the executions. Defense lawyers questioned the validity of the court, disputed the prosecution’s account of the events and claimed that the executions were legal.

The trial saw frequent outbursts from the defendants and clashes between defense attorneys and judges. Three members of the defense team were murdered during the course of the trial, and the defense accused prosecutors of attempting to bribe witnesses. The chief judge of the court resigned in January over differences with Iraqi authorities over the conduct of the trial.

Victoria Wyndham on Another World and another life

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.

Impressions Of Siberia}

Category : Timber

Submitted by: Nomadrick Chapo

Mention the word Siberia, and images of gulags, frozen tundra and wastelands may come to mind. While there is some truth to these, my impressions of Siberia included more.

Siberia comprises more than 75 percent of modern Russia. Unless you visit, there is simply no way to describe the total landmass of this much-maligned area of the world. To give you some perspective, consider the fact that Siberia is bigger than Canada, has more natural resources than any area of the world, spans nine time zones and contains the largest plain in the world.

One of the best ways to give you an impression of the size of Siberia is to discuss the infamous gulag system. When one thinks of a gulag or prison, visions of guards with guns, electrified fences and so on come to mind. In Siberia, most of the gulags did not have fences or any kind of barrier to keep people in. With freezing temperatures in the winter, huge rivers of mud and water in the summer, Siberia formed a natural gulag for many of the prisoners. If a prisoner escaped from a gulag, there was simply nowhere to go. The closest population center might be 1,000 miles away.

Siberia comes from the Mongolian word sibir, which means “sleeping land.” In the early 1700’s, Siberia became a place of exile. It continued to be “the last stop” for criminals and political exiles throughout much of the 20th century. The city of Chita is in fact known as the City of Exiles.

With the end of communism, Siberia has seen a voluntary migration of Russians who work on the Trans-Siberian Railway or in the massive natural resource industries. Siberia is the home to tremendously large oil, gold, timber and diamond deposits. With the turn to capitalism, the country is making a major effort to take advantage of such resources. This has led to a population explosion in cities such as Irkutsk, Chita and Ulan Ude.

Siberia is always depicted as a land of freezing snow. Having lived there, I can tell you it does get Oh, my god cold in the winter. Temperatures can drop into the 40s. In the spring and summer, however, temperatures can reach as high as 110 degrees. With such a massive area, the climates and temperatures fall all over the map. Put another way, the United States could fit in Siberia, so you can see how temperatures might vary.

Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is the largest fresh water lake in the world. Fed by over 300 rivers, the lake is really an inland sea. The lake has over 30 islands. If you drained all of the water from lakes Superior, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Ontario, you still couldnt fill Lake Baikal. Standing on one shore, you cannot see the other side. It is simply huge.

Siberia is one of the few locations in the world still considered to be an untamed adventure travel destination. You can fish, hike, camp, hunt, drink vodka, ski, swim, take in a spa and do just about anything you like. The Siberians are universally friendly and can tell one heck of a story.

If you get a chance to visit Siberia, I highly recommend it. Heck, I stayed for a year!

Ford announces deep production cuts in response to growing losses

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, August 19, 2006

Ford has announced sweeping cuts of 21% (168,000 units) in its US and Canadian production, resulting in the partial closure of ten of its plants during the fourth quarter. The measure comes on top of existing turnaround plans announced in January, in which 25,000 to 30,000 positions should be cut and 14 plants closed by 2012.

Ford is the world’s third-largest automaker and the U.S.’s second-largest. However it has in recent years been struggling with poor profitability and shrinking market shares. In 2005 it lost $1.6 billion and recently the company reported a second quarter loss of $254 million and a 34% year-year decline in sales for the month of July.

George Pipas, director of sales analysis at Ford, points to rising gas prices having negative impact on the sale of the companies SUV lines as well as its sales leader, the F-series pickup truck as being the direct cause of the latest initiative.

So far the following plants are thought to be affected:

Ford’s stock fell 17 cents (2.1%) to $8 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Category : Uncategorized

The Blunkett diaries, being serialised in the Guardian, claim that Gordon Brown opposed the war against Iraq. Only at the last minute did he give in, according to the diaries, when he realised that Blair would sack him otherwise.

Gordon Brown, interviewed by the Guardian, said he did not think Blunkett had ever said such a thing and that, if he was reported as having done so, he was being misquoted.

The diary entries are contemporary with the events and were recorded shortly after the Cabinet meeting on Iraq.

Trump Stance On The Environment Is A Disgrace}

Category : Management Software

Submitted by: Cathy Allen

“Throughout recent years I have been spreading the message to ensure, protect, and to offer respect to the very being that all life dwells upon, EARTH.

Our recently chose president, Donald Trump has an altogether different message. His position is to ensure, safeguard and to offer respect to organizations as it were. Overlooking and expelling nature issues that will in the long run be our countries’ and plant end.

Our country comes in the second place behind China when to comes to contamination, representing 16 percent of total worldwide ozone harming substance discharges. At present, the choices made by Trump and his Republican-controlled Congress on condition will be basic for future eras of individuals, plants, creepy crawlies and creatures. Trump has gone as far to state that environmental change is a “”myth”” made up by China to make fabricating non-aggressive.

All in all, what could our America look like with a president that sees the plant as an insignificant asset for enormous business? Here’s a look at what Trump’s organization gets ready for the earth.

Trump’s initially request of business is to destroy the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). In my last article, I highlighted what the organization does to secure the earth and individuals against organizations that contaminated the air and water. At the point when Trump was met by, Chris Wallace from ‘Fox News Sunday’ a month ago with the question, ‘who will ensure nature?’ Trump stated, “”We’ll approve of the earth ..we can leave a bit, however you can’t wreck organizations’. Trump as ventured to select, Myron Ebell to head-up and disassemble the EPA, who the Financial Times calls, “”one of America’s most noticeable environmental change doubters.”” Ebell works has been supported by some of our country’s most noticeably bad ecological polluters, similar to Murray Energy the country’s biggest coal mining organization. Ebell, additionally noticed that he will be supporting all the more ‘huge coal’, “”with the goal that we can battle the jabber put out by the natural development.””

Second up, Trump and his organization has arrangements to Reopen Shuttered Coal Mines. What does that intend to the air our country will be relaxing? Among every single non-renewable energy source, coal is the nastiest and dirties than oil, gas and normal gasses. Along these lines, while Trump is gloating about giving America’s coal excavators back something to do. Under his arrangement, those coal excavators, their families, their group and their states (West Virginia and Pennsylvania) will see an expansion of unsafe levels of contamination in the very water that they drink and the air that they breath.

Third, Trump plan to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement, promising to cross out the assention and pull back all financing for atmosphere related United Nation programs. This activity will unquestionably tell the world that America does not think about a worldwide temperature alteration or environmental change.

Fourth up, Trump’s organization has arrangements to endorse the Keystone XL pipeline extend, which would transport unrefined petroleum from oil sands in Alberta, Canada, through Montana and into Nebraska. Under the Obama organization, the U.S. State Department established that it is likely that the proposed pipeline, which crosses a huge number of waterways and streams including a few noteworthy streams like the Yellowstone and Platte will encounter spills. Trump reacts to these discoveries, “”I need it fabricated, however I need a bit of the benefits, that how will make our nation rich once more.”” Trump likewise is a money related partner of the Keystone XL pipeline.

In conclusion, Trump needs to decrease U.S. interest in Clean Energy choices. Trump said last November in Newton, Iowa, “”wind vitality is an issue, an extremely costly type of vitality””. Despite what might be expected, Wind Energy in states like Texas and Iowa produces the most astounding measure of twist power as a rate of its aggregate vitality portfolio, wind is less expensive and cleaner than coal or gas-controlled vitality.

As a tree hugger, I am ideally, that all individuals over our country will resist this recently chose organization on natural issue. All things considered, the water you drink and the air you breath. Emergency declared in Peru as Mt. Ubinas threatens to erupt

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

The government of Peru declared a state of emergency in the vicinity of the Ubinas volcano on Saturday as it began to spew out ash and smoke over a 6km area, indicating a possible eruption in the near future. The civil defense institute has recommended the total evacuation of the 3,500 residents of the district of Ubinas.

The Peruvian military has been ordered to aid in the evacuation of civilians from the area. Aid shipments of tents, water and powdered milk are being sent to the affected area.

Those who decided to evacuate were brought to the town of Querapi by bus. Others who reside near the volcano chose to stay behind to protect their livestock and belongings.

No human deaths have been reported so far, but llamas and alpacas have died after eating grass contaminated by volcanic pollutants. People have reported eye and breathing problems following exposure to the acid-laden ash and smoke.

The 18700-ft. high Ubinas is Peru’s most active volcano, with 23 eruptions recorded since 1550. The current activity follows a 40-year dormant period. Scientists at the Institute of Geophysics have warned that a dome of incandescent lava appears to be building up in the volcanic crater.

Tamil Nadu Elections: DMK, AIADMK promise freebies

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) parties have announce “freebies” as part of their election manifestos in the lead-up to the vote in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Freebies have been a success from the 2006 Tamil Nadu elections when DMK lured voters by announcing free colour televisions to households. That triumph led the major opposition AIADMK to announce similar freebies in their manifesto published Thursday.

DMK has announced free laptops to college students, kitchen appliances and modern networks to rural regions. The AIADMK, publishing their manifesto later, expanded on each of the promises of the DMK, plus offering 4g gold mangalsutra for the poor, monetary help for rural households and fishermen, free rice, and more.

AIADMK manifesto addresses larger issues, such as taking on the near-monopoly of the cable industry television industry, starting new Power generation plants to address power shortages in recent years.
