US government files lawsuit against BP Exploration in Alaska

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

The United States government has filed a civil lawsuit against BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. (BPXA) alleging that the company “violated federal clean air and water laws” by “illegally discharging” more than 200,000 gallons crude oil during two oil spills in 2006 on Alaska’s North Slope in Prudhoe Bay.

BPXA previously pleaded guilty to one count of criminal negligence in illegally discharging the oil and paid US$20 million in damages. As a result of the plea, the lawsuit was filed saying that they “failed” to prepare for such a disaster by implementing “certain [sic] spill prevention measures” as the law requires.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the [DOT]-Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), alleges that BPXA “illegally discharged more than 200,000 gallons of crude oil from its pipelines” and “violated the Clean Air Act by improperly removing asbestos-containing materials from its pipelines” It also says that they “failed to comply in a timely manner with a corrective action order that the [DOT]-Pipeline and PHMSA issued to BPXA pursuant to federal pipeline safety laws.”

According to the Associated Press (AP), BPXA spokespeople state that the company has taken certain measures, making sure daily operations are safe.

“We have taken significant steps to ensure that our operations are safe and reliable, and protect the environment. Those include building a new $500 million system of oil transit lines at Prudhoe Bay,” said spokesman Steve Rinehart to the AP.

The spills were discovered on March 2, 2006 and covered nearly two acres. It was initially estimated that nearly 270,000 gallons had spilled. The official loss was put at 212,252 gallons.

BPXA, a subsidiary of BP America, specializes in exploring and finding locations to drill for oil, as well as drilling for it.

By Mariela Perez-Simons

Pacojet is a revolutionary countertop machine that is essential to every culinary professional kitchen. It whips up frozen dessert creations quickly, and without much fuss. This is a dream machine for chefs who strive for top quality with minimum effort. It has become an essential food preparation device for chefs nation and world wide.

Pacojet is best known for its exclusive Pacotizing process: mixing and pureeing deeply frozen food directly in its frozen state, producing a fine consistency intended to maximize flavors. Using Pacojet as a sorbet, ice cream, or gelato machine is best when using fresh and natural ingredients.

Pacojet isnt just for making frozen desserts. It is a versatile, creative, and labor saving tool that also makes savory sauces, pts, and anything you can imagine.

The 3 step Pacojet process couldnt be easier. Step one: fill the beaker with your ingredients. Step two: freeze filled beakers to -20 degrees celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) for 24 hours in a regular freezer to ensure that the contents are frozen to the core. If you have a shock or blast freezer, this only takes 4 hours. Step three: Pacotize the contents, using the pacotizing blade with the machine. Enter the desired portions, and the Pacojet does the rest. The results will astound you!

Whatever the application, whether its appetizers, concentrates for soups and sauces, or your favorite ice cream or gelato recipes, the Pacojet process is always the same. Beakers can be prepared in advance or during slow periods, stored deep frozen until needed, and require no thawing either prior to or during processing. Because of the constant frozen state, there is no need for additives, preservatives, or flavor enhancers. Partially used beakers can be put back into the freezer, which means nothing is ever wasted.

No kitchen is too big or too small for Pacojet. Its compact countertop design fits well in any space. The needs of larger kitchens can be accommodated simply adding more Pacojet beakers for higher production rates. Many chefs are known to rely on multiple Pacojet machines in their work spaces. Pacojet requires no special installation and uses a standard socket.

Another benefit of Pacojet is that it will cut time, labor, and ingredients costs, thus increasing the profitability of any restaurant. Cleaning the Pacojet is also a simple and time saving endeavor. Its even easier than the 3 step Pacojet process.

This high performance machine encourages the culinary expert to experiment with innovative ideas for food textures, flavors, aromas, and taste for frozen desserts and savory dishes.

Pacoject is made in Switzerland and is the most innovative food preparation appliance to appear on the market in ten years. It was developed in collaboration with renowned chefs from around the world. Pacojet provides a simple and reliable method for the fresh production of a large variety of frozen desserts. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Whatever Became Of This E Ticket Attraction?}

Category : Trucks

Submitted by: Louis Mongello

(or – “20,000 Leagues Under the Pooh”)

One of the most innovative attractions ever created for the Disney theme parks was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. A Walt Disney World “E-Ticket” attraction since its opening day on October 14, 1971 (back when WDW used individual coupons instead of pay-one-price tickets), this Fantasyland ride closed exactly 23 years to the day after it opened, making it the only E-Ticket attraction to ever be removed from the park.

The 38 passenger (39 with the Cast Member “Captain”) subs used in the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction based on the Disney film of the same name were distinguished by their Roman numeral markings on the outside. They were built in a shipyard in nearby Tampa, and then brought over on flatbed trucks to Walt Disney World. In fact, when “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” was open, the 24 subs that operated at Walt Disney World and Disneyland gave the Walt Disney Company the 5th largest naval fleet in the world!

Guests boarded Captain Nemo’s submarine and traveled under the sea through coral reefs, dark caverns, and into unexpected danger below deadly ice caps. Sadly, the ride closed in 1994 with almost no notice to guests, not due to lack of popularity, but because of constant ride breakdowns, loading difficulties (the subs were not handicapped-accessible), long lines, and the difficulty and high costs of maintenance (including keeping 11.5 million gallons of water clear enough for guests to see through).

For some time after the attraction had closed, the subs remained “docked” in the lagoon, leaving futile hope that the ride would be refurbished and reopened. However, the subs were soon removed and the lagoon drained. They were later stored for some time in backstage maintenance areas, but have long since been removed to whereabouts unknown well, for the most part, anyway. While rumors persist that many of the old subs have been either dismantled or buried on the property somewhere, two of the subs were brought to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, for exploration by Disney Cruise Line passengers. As recent as January, 2005, parts form the old subs, including portholes and flip-down seats, were available for sale in Epcots Art of Disney store, and the inevitable secondary market of eBay. (And yes, I have already purchased my personal pieces of Walt Disney World attraction history). Additionally, as part of Disneys Piece of Disney History Pin Collection, Guests can purchase actual pieces of the 20,000 Leagues attraction in a 2500-piece, limited edition pin.

The attractions former queue area became what was known as the “Fantasyland Character Festival,” where you could meet and get autographs from Disney characters. The back of the lagoon area was used for “Ariel’s Grotto,” where Guests could meet the star of “The Little Mermaid, and children could play in a soft park area dotted with water jets. For years, rumors of a larger “Little Mermaid” ride swirled, and in 2003, with the success of “Finding Nemo,” similar, yet unsubstantiated rumors began to surface.

For quite some time thereafter, the empty lagoon that once took Guests to faraway lands on perilous, undersea adventures stood empty – a sad reminder of days gone by. Then, in 2004, something strange happened… The area surrounding the lagoon was closed off using the familiar green walls that signal Guests that major renovations are going on behind them. The massive process of removing the entire contents of the lagoon and filling it with dirt began, and at the time of this writing, was recently completed. A trip aboard an elephant ride car high above Dumbo reveals to the curious eye that construction has begun on what will eventually become a Hundred Acre Wood meet and greet area for characters from Winnie the Pooh. Conveniently located across from the popular The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh attraction, this temporary area will give children a place to find Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore and others, have their picture taken (and of course, purchase some themed merchandise on the way out Im sure).

Rumors have begun to surface that eventually (as in about 7-10 years), the area is to be converted into a gate-buster attraction that will logically bridge Toontown and Fantasyland. (but Ill save that story for another article). Then again, dont be so sure that the Hundred Acre Wood area will be going away all too quickly. Remember, thats what Disney said about Toontown and Voyage of the Little Mermaid – they were just temporary, too. Only time will tell. For now, the wonderful 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction remains a distant part of Disney history, and a cherished memory for millions of fans.

Parents arrested after putting baby on Craigslist

Category : Uncategorized

Sunday, June 1, 2008

A couple from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada has been arrested on charges of public mischief after listing their seven day old baby girl on the popular Internet classified ads website Craigslist.

The listing claimed that the baby was unexpected, “healthy and very cute”. It asked CAN 10 000 for the baby. It also listed a phone number belonging to a stolen cellphone, which was used to find the couple.

It was first noticed by a 62-year old grandmother browsing the website for furniture, who said “I was shaking, and I thought, ‘Come on, how did this even get through?'” The couple claimed that the listing, which has since been removed, was a hoax.

The father, Jeremy Pete, had a history of car thefts and evasion of police, while the mother, 23-year-old Bethany Granholm, had convictions of property theft, fraud and impersonation. The parents have now been released, but charges are still being considered. The baby has been placed in provincial care.

A suspected copycat incident occurred just four days later, also offering a seven-day-old baby girl for CAN 10 000 on Craigslist. This incident turned out to be a hoax, and no child was in danger.

Last week saw a similar incident in Germany, where a couple listed a seven month old baby on eBay. In this case the police have launched a child trafficking investigation, despite the parents’ assertion that the listing was a joke.

It then becomes necessary for us to visit an emergency dentist London who would be able to provide us solutions to the problems. Sensitivity is a major sign of damaged teeth and requires immediate cure. It is best to first get a proper consultation so that you are able to correctly identify the problem. An emergency dentist can also fix your broken or cracked tooth to make the teeth set look perfect.

One of the most common dental problems is toothache. It is important that you visit an emergency dentist London as it is risky to leave it untreated. Truck carrying 12 million bees overturns in New Brunswick

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

A truck on the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick, Canada, carrying 12 million bees has overturned. The truck was carrying 330 crates of bees when it tipped on a ramp in Saint-Léonard. The bees were used to help pollinate blueberries, and were heading back to Ontario.

The accident happened in the morning hours. Bee experts were called in to control the bees, and they were helped by the rain as bees dislike it, with the bees staying close to the truck. However, by midday, the sun came out and the bees became much more agitated. The beekeepers had to douse them with smoke, while firefighters attempted to hose the bees down to try to get them back near the truck.

There were no serious injuries from the incident, but some reporters at the scene got stung repeatedly. Anyone with an allergy to bees has been advised to stay at least 200 metres away from the scene.

The highway was first reduced to three lanes from four, before being completely closed, to prevent curious onlookers from being endangered by the swarms of bees angered and agitated by the incident.

This accident was the first of its kind in New Brunswick.

How To Judge The Condition Of Antique Furniture?

How to Judge the Condition of Antique Furniture?

by

Matt Young

When evaluating antique furniture, there are many techniques that can be utilized by anyone who wants to make an accurate valuation. There are particular warning signs to watch out for in antique pieces that indicate newness, and they can be discovered easily if one learns about them ahead of time.

On the other hand, there are indicators of age that can be observed, which are helpful to know about because they imply higher value in the furniture. It may be costly and time consuming to have antiques appraised by an expert, so it can be helpful to have a basic education on the signs to look out for when judging the value of antiques.

Indicators of High Value

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFKyih1cD-I[/youtube]

In this section are some characteristics of age (and higher value) that can be seen in antiques. A general concept to be aware of is that wood and glass tend to become warped over a long period of time. For example, wooden tables that may have been perfectly round when it was built will most likely not still be perfectly round if it is truly an antique, because the wood will have become warped. The same can be observed in the glass that is found in antique mirrors and other glass pieces.

In wooden furniture, look for variations in colour. These occur in old furniture because certain segments of the furniture are exposed to light for many years, while others, like the back of a dresser, are not. If there are signs that the furniture has been reupholstered several times, this can indicate a higher age and value. General indicators of age can also include normal wear tear and build-ups of dirt or dust.

Indicators of Lower Value

It is also important to know how to avoid buying new furniture that can be mistaken for antique furniture. In terms of coloration, the inverse of the advice above is true: new furniture tends to be uniform in colour because it has not been exposed to light long enough to show discoloration. If there are screw holes in the furniture with nothing in them, this likely means that part of the original piece of hardware (such as a handle) is missing, which will decrease the value.

It is not uncommon for some antique items to be forged or counterfeit. The people who produce these fake antiques will use various techniques to artificially make the antiques look older than they really are, such as using old screws or other hardware. Finally, if different types of wood are visible in the furniture, this can mean that the item was damaged and repaired at some point after its original production. However, if you are thinking of buying really high priced items, it may be advisable to call the experts since a few errors can be costly.

Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy

Category : Uncategorized

Sunday, May 18, 2014

The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that the state of the housing market in the United Kingdom is the current biggest domestic threat to the country’s economy, due to lack of house building, and regulatory issues.

In an interview to be aired on Sky News today, he said the housing market is the “biggest risk” to the economy and has “deep, deep structural problems”. Of house building he said: “There are not sufficient houses built in the UK. To go back to Canada, there are half as many people in Canada as in the UK, twice as many houses are built every year in Canada as in the UK and we can’t influence that.”

“We’re not going to build a single house at the Bank of England. We can’t influence that. What we can influence […] is whether the banks are strong enough. Do they have enough capital against risk in the housing market?”

Carney also said the Bank of England would look into the procedures used to issue loans and mortgages to see if they were being granted appropriately: “We’d be concerned if there was a rapid increase in high loan-to-value mortgages across the banks. We’ve seen that creeping up and it’s something we’re watching closely.”

Kris Hopkins responded to Carney on behalf of the government, saying the government “inherited a broken housing market, but our efforts to fix it are working”. “We’ve scrapped the failed top-down planning system, built over 170,000 affordable homes and released more surplus brownfield sites for new housing. We’ve also helped homebuyers get on the housing ladder, because if people can buy homes builders will build them. Housebuilding is now at its highest level since 2007 and climbing. Last year councils gave permission for almost 200,000 new homes under the locally-led planning system and more than 1,000 communities have swiftly taken up neighbourhood planning. It’s clear evidence the government’s long-term economic plan is working.”

Earlier this month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on the UK government to “tighten” access to the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme introduced by George Osborne and the coalition government in 2013. ‘Help to Buy’ has also recently been criticised by three former Chancellors of the Exchequer — the Conservatives Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, and former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling. Darling said: “Unless supply can be increased substantially, we will exacerbate that situation with schemes like Help to Buy.”

Wesley So wins TATA Steel Chess

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

On Sunday, Filipino-US chess grandmaster Wesley So won this year’s Tata Steel Chess Tournament, held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, securing 9.0 points out of thirteen. Following closely in second place was current World Champion Magnus Carlsen with 8.0 points.

Wesley So won five games and drew the remaining eight. A player gets a point for each win, half a point for a draw and no points for a loss. He is currently on a 56 lossless game streak.

In the final round, Wesley So was paired against Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi. Wesley So captured a central pawn which was expected to be recaptured to equalise material but wasn’t. Soon, his opponent unexpectedly castled offering a pawn sacrifice which was accepted. Despite being ahead in material his opponent threatened to capture his queen. However, he was able to defend using his extra central pawn and prevent counter-play forcing the Russian to resign.

He won last year’s Grand Chess Tour by winning the Sinquefield Cup and London Chess Classic and coming second in the Leuven Grand Chess Tour.

Magnus Carlsen won four, tied eight and lost a game against Richárd Rapport. In the last round he faced his rival and contender for the World Chess Championship of the last year, Russian Sergey Karjakin. In the game, Karjakin provoked Carlsen to sacrifice his knight on which grandmaster Fabiano Caruana tweeted, “Karjakin must be in a very charitable mood”. He quickly sacrificed his knight pinning Karjakin’s knight to his queen. Despite being a piece down he gained an advantageous position. Karjakin defended his position extremely well, as grandmaster Alejandro Ramírez said, “He can commit the most despicable errors and then show world-class toughness from the next second!”. The defence worked and a draw was agreed upon.

Also known as the “Wimbledon of Chess”, the Tata Steel Chess tournament attracts top chess players every year. The tournament has two professional groups, Masters and Challengers, and an amateur group. It is organised in a round-robin format where each player plays a game against all other players. The tournament is scheduled to run its 80th edition next year in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.
