Fall festivals bring out the crowds in the Atlanta area. Arts and crafts shows and other festivals are scheduled nearly every weekend, and the cooler weather makes these outdoor events pleasant. Attendees can shop, listen to live music, and enjoy the seasonal activities. Here are the highlights of some of the area s popular events.

The 45th Yellow Daisy Festival is scheduled for September 5-8 at Stone Mountain Park. The festival is named for the Confederate Yellow Daisy which blooms on the mountain each September. Thousands attend the 4 day festival, which has been voted a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. It has grown over 40 years from a small arts and crafts show to a large event featuring more than 400 artists and crafters. Booths are set up at the park s Events Meadow and along adjacent woodland trails. There is plenty of shade, in case the weather is warm. The festival is family friendly. The Children s Corner offers face painting, crafts, storytelling, a petting zoo, and a magic show. Dad can watch the football game on the big screen at the Men s Den. Attendees can enjoy food and live music throughout the festival. Hours on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday are 10am-6pm. The festival runs from 10am-7:30pm on Saturday. Guests can watch Stone Mountain s LaserShow Spectacular on Saturday evening following the festival. Stone Mountain Park is located on Hwy. 78 East. Festival admission is free, but there is a $10 per vehicle parking fee at the park.

The Atlanta Arts Festival will be held September 14-15 at Piedmont Park in midtown. The professional juried fine arts event was ranked in the Top 100 Fine Art and Design Shows in 2012 by Sunshine Artist Magazine. Many categories of art will be represented including painting, photography, mixed media, metal work, woodwork, jewelry, fiber arts, glass, and clay. The festival will feature artist demonstrations, food, and live entertainment. Festival hours are 10am-7pm on Saturday and 10am-5pm on Sunday. Booths are set up near the 14th Street entrance, and admission is free. Limited parking is available at the SAGE Parking Facility adjacent to Atlanta Botanical Garden. Attendees may also take MARTA to the Midtown or Arts Center stations and walk several blocks to the park.

The Sandy Springs Festival will run September 21-22 at Heritage Green in the City of Sandy Springs. Attendees can enjoy a juried Artist Market, 5K and 10K races, chalk art competition, live entertainment, and food. A kid s area will feature crafts, inflatables, face painting, and a petting zoo. The Kiwanis Pet Parade will showcase pets of all shapes and sizes along with their owners in crazy costumes. Festival hours are 9am-7pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday. Free parking and shuttle is available at Century Springs East and West parking lots at Hammond and Lake Forest drives. Festival admission is $5 for adults and $2 for ages 6-17. Two day passes are $7 and $3. Funds benefit Heritage Sandy Springs park and museum.

Planning a vacation can be one of the more fulfilling experiences for a family, especially if you are going to visit the mountains in Colorado. You can also enroll them in classes and summer camps while you are there.

What about the elevation? For those who normally live near sea level, this is a concern. After all, the elevation is higher than 8,000 feet where the living quarters are located, and when you ride the free gondola, you will be above 10,000 at times. To deal with these heights, it is recommended that you avoid alcohol for at least the first day. Do not over exert yourself until you know how you will react to the extreme altitudes. If you experience flu-like symptoms such as headache, weakness, upset stomach, light-headedness or trouble sleeping, it could be that you are suffering from altitude sickness. Always drink plenty of water, but if the symptoms persist, you should visit the on-site medical team. They are well equipped to deal with altitude illness.
