INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS 101 (FOR DUMMIES)

Indra ChitreIntake and Exhaust Systems 101By Indranil ChitreWhat does this essay cover?Air FilterThrottle BodyIntake ManifoldExhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) ValveEngine / Combustion ChamberINTAKE SYSTEMThe intake system deals with allowing 3 elements in to the combustion chamber of the engine:a) Airb) Fuelc) Partial Exhaust Gases- Note: even though EGR valve deals with EXHAUST gases, I’ve put it on the intake side since these exhaust gases are “going in” the combustion chamberEngine / Combustion ChamberEXHAUST SYSTEMExhaust ManifoldCatalytic ConverterMufflerTailpipeThe exhaust system deals with allowing 2 elements from the combustion chamber of the engine to the atmosphere:a) Exhaust Gasesb) Sound WavesAdditionally, there are a few sensors that we shall cover in the essay. The sensors covered are in no way comprehensive to those required for the optimal functioning of a vehicle. There are also some ancillary systems like secondary air injection systems that are not covered in this essay.AIR FILTERFunction – A single air filter is used primarily to ensure that no dust, debris, biomaterials like insects and faeces, stray materials, etc enter the vehicle components and systems. Such particles can accelerate the wear and tear of the components once they enter them. Air filters also serve secondary functions like reducing intake noise and acting as a flame arrester in case of a backfire.Make – Air filters are made of paper, and the housing is made in 2 parts of plastic (most of) or steel. Some high performance air filters are made of foam or cotton. The microfibers contained within air filters stop particles as small as 10 – 25 microns in size (diameter). To give a perspective of size, human hair is 50 microns in diameter, and our naked eye cannot see particles less than 40 microns in diameter. As noted in the picture above, air filters can be box-type (most of); some are also conical or circular in shape.Maintenance – Overtime air filters get clogged up i.e. the ducts and spacing within the air filters get filled with unwanted particles. This affects the flow of air through the air filters and consequently within the intake system. Since the rate of air flow and fuel injection is highly critical to the optimal performance of an engine, a clogged air filter should be taken care of immediately. Air filters are relatively inexpensive, less than $50.00, and easy to replace (no need for an expert mechanic) hence they should be periodically inspected and replaced. Manufacturers of air filters provide guidelines for their replacement either in terms of months in service or miles driven by the vehicle. These guidelines assume “normal” operating conditions. Should the vehicle be used for off-road or other applications e.g. in stormy or dusty weather, the air filter should be replaced more frequently than the stated guidelines.Sensors – The 2 main sensors used in conjunction with air filters are:a) Mass Air Flow (MAF) – this sensor is used to measure the amount of air passing through the intake system after the air filter.b) Air Filter Restriction – this sensor measures the pressure drop in air after passing through the air filter; used to estimate whether the air filter needs cleaning or replacement. The “replace air filter” message lights up on the vehicle dashboard if the drop in pressure warrants it. Depending on the vehicle make and model, and the fuel type, general guidelines are 15 – 30 in H2O drop in pressure will trigger the message.Other Key Items – Air filters should not be placed close to the throttle body or the turbocharger.THROTTLE BODYFunction – Throttle Body controls the flow of air within the intake system. When someone presses the accelerator, the throttle body valve opens and allows more air in. This in turn causes the fuel injectors to inject the necessary fuel to maintain an optimal Air:Fuel ratio in the combustion chamber.Note – The above air speeds can exceed 300 feet p/sec. High air speed helps maintain fuel in suspension. When air speeds drop below 50 feet p/sec, as is the case in some idle conditions, fuel droplets begin to separate.INTAKE MANIFOLD – THROTTLE BODY FUEL INJECTEDFunction – The intake air-fuel mixture needs to be distributed equally, in terms of amount and quality, to all engine cylinders. This is accomplished through the use of the intake manifold. Note in the picture above; air and fuel mixture enters the top portion of the manifold, and is distributed to the individual cylinders through the 4 runners.Make – The diameter of the manifold is designed with some compromise. Small diameter manifolds are essential to maintain high charge velocity, which in turn ensures thorough mixing of air and fuel, hence improves the fuel economy. Large diameter runners pass the most air and are helpful for high-speed, race driving applications.INTAKE MANIFOLD – PORT FUEL INJECTEDMake – The PFI intake manifold has to be optimized only for air flow (as opposed to air and fuel in the above). Fuel is injected right before the intake valve. The manifold is usually manufactured in 2 separate parts; upper manifold, also known as the Plenum, and lower manifold made of runners. The length of the runners represent a design compromise. Long runners are suitable for low-RPM torque; short runners for high-RPM torque. Some intake manifolds called Variable Intakes have both long and short runners. Depending on the particular application of high or low RPM, either the short or long runner is respectively activated through computer control.Diagnosis – In the event the upper intake gasket is blown, a vacuum leak may form. In the event the lower intake gasket is blown, a vacuum leak, coolant leak or oil leak may occur.EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) VALVEFunction – A portion (5 – 10%) of the exhaust gases are recirculated back in the combustion chamber through the EGR valve. Exhaust gases are inert gases i.e. they do not burn in the combustion chamber. Since the exhaust gases take up a portion of the combustion chamber, less space remains for the fresh air and fuel. This reduces the peak combustion temperatures which results in lower NOx emissions.Make – In V-type engines, gas passages are cast within the inlet manifold. In In-line engines, an external tube is used to carry the exhaust gases to the EGR valve.EXHAUST MANIFOLDFunction – Exhaust manifolds are quite the opposite to intake manifolds. Exhaust manifolds collect the exhaust gases from each of the cylinders and pass them to the rest of the exhaust system through a single port. Exhaust manifolds are also designed to minimize backpressure and keep exhaust noise at a minimum.Make – Exhaust manifolds carry gases at high temperatures often exceeding 1,500F, hence are made of sturdier construction compared to intake manifolds. Exhaust manifolds are made of either cast iron or steel.Maintenance – Exhaust manifolds tend to expand during operation. This creates stresses within the manifold material. When an exhaust manifold is removed from the cylinder head, the manifold tends to get warped. This can be straightened out using a suitable jack. While replacing the exhaust manifold, exhaust manifold gaskets should be used even if they were not in the original factory configuration. These gaskets provide room for the manifold to slide on top of the cylinder head.CATALYTIC CONVERTERFunction – To reduce harmful emissions contained within the exhaust gases. The Cat reduces NOx, HCs and CO through a 2-step process, by converting them in Nitrogen, CO2 and Water, which are relatively harmless.Make – The Cat is made of 2 ceramic blocks; the first one containing Platinum and Rhodium, the second one containing Platinum and Palladium. Step 1 reduces NOx levels in the exhaust gases; Step 2 reduces the HCs and CO.Sensors – There are 2 Oxygen (O2) sensors used in conjunction with the Cat. 1st O2 sensor measures the level of Oxygen before the exhaust gases enter the Cat. This sensor sends rich/lean signals to the vehicles’ ECU, which then directs fuel injection accordingly. 2nd O2 sensor measures the effectiveness of the Cat in reducing the harmful emissions.MUFFLERFunction – The combustion chamber of the cylinders produce pressure pulses while the exhaust gases are removed in the exhaust stroke. These pressure pulses create air vibration, which causes loud exhaust noise. The muffler reduces this exhaust noise before emitting the exhaust gases to the tailpipe and eventually to the atmosphere. Sometimes resonator tubes are used in addition to the mufflers to further dampen exhaust noise.Make – The muffler is divided in 4 different chambers. Each chamber uses specific engineering principles to dampen the exhaust noise. For example, chamber 1 uses perforated holes to disperse and dampen the exhaust noise; chamber 4 works on Helmholtz principle of noise cancellation through opposing sound waves.Note – Exhaust gases expand and cool at the inlet to the muffler; this causes the gases to become denser. Hence the outlet to the mufflers can be of smaller diameter compared to the inlet, without any loss of flow efficiency.References:a) Level 1 Inspector Training, STI, Chapter 10 – Intake and Exhaust Systemsb) Wikipedia

Category : Design Agency

Submitted by: Keith Cangiarlla

This is a day riddled with apprehension for those in a relationship and also for those that are not in a relationship. All that is required on February 14th is to be thoughtful. Extravagance if any should really be left for other days such as birthdays and such. If you want to be extravagant with gifts and so on, this is fine. If your are looking for Valentine’s Day gifts, here are some Valentine’s Day gift ideas to consider for your special someone.

Although this day has become commercialized, it is good to have a day to remind us to appreciate those in our lives. It would be good if we did this every day and did not need a special day set aside for love. You can show your love and appreciation any number of ways for little or no cost to you. However you do this to celebrate Valentine’s is completely up to you. You can do something as simple as writing a simple note or buying or creating a Valentine’s Day card letting them know how much you love and appreciate them.

If you need additional help with Valentine’s Day gift ideas, the easiest way to show your appreciation is with flowers. If you have a flower garden, you can create a bouquet for your love or purchase various bouquets of flowers. These can vary from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. It is important to get her flowers that she likes and not necessarily roses. Roses though make some of the best Valentine’s Day gifts and are appreciated by most women. Cooking a simple meal for your loved one and spending time with them is also great way to celebrate Valentine’s.

Another easy way to show your appreciation is with candy even for those who are trying to watch their weight although being careful in this area is key. A lot of people do think that it wouldn’t be Valentine’s without the candy. There are many variations that will make great Valentine’s Day gifts but you need to consider the recipient’s tastes.

A unique idea to set yourself apart with candy is to consider creating a bouquet featuring your loved one’s favorite candy. This will show how thoughtful you are which is what most people want in someone that they love. It would be great if you made this bouquet of candy look like a flower bouquet with all the ribbons and such. It is okay to be creative and this is usually most appreciated by the one you love.

Another one of the great Valentines Day gift ideas is to give the gift of a getaway such as a weekend getaway. A romantic getaway such as a bed and breakfast getaway is a great way to renew your relationship. This is a great gift usually only for those that have been in a relationship together for a while and not usually the newly dating. Every case is different and you will just have to judge your relationship to determine whether a romantic getaway is an appropriate Valentine’s Day gift.

Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Category : Uncategorized

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

IBM and Cisco in attempt to create a universal platform for communications software development

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, March 9, 2007

IBM and Cisco have announced the development of a new platform, based on Eclipse and OSGi (Open Services Gateway initiative), which should unite all communication and collaboration software developers under a single platform.

Before the UC2 (Unified Communication and Collaboration) the unified communication has suffered because of a lack of a platform to be used by all software developers, rather than a series of them and, moreover, provided by different vendors. According to Adam Gartenberg from IBM Lotus Software Group this was the main cause for this partial stagnation.

However, the UC2 is meant to ease the work of software developers. Gartenberg stated that this platform is very flexible and will certainly draw much attention form programmers. They will be able to create different plug-ins and small applications to remotely control other, major application.

The companies have also unveiled a series of their other joint projects. These project will be based on a set of application programming interface from Lotus (SameTime) and Cisco.

The add-ons planned are integration of a series of additional functions and features into the SameTime software from Lotus. Thus, in a few months, the SameTime users will benefit from such functions as click-to-call and voicemail. This will enable easier instant messaging inside the Cisco’s Unified IP phones’ system.

The fact that the platform will be based on Eclipse will make the numerous developers create many communications services, mainly for remote users to benefit from a series of new functions of ERP and CRM applications.

Nortel Networks – a partner of Microsoft since last year and Cisco’s rival in the area – didn’t have much success in the communication services field.

As for Microsoft, the experts are waiting for the reaction of the Bill Gates’ company on the ideas and offers made by IBM and Cisco for enterprise communications and collaboration solutions.

ACLU President Strossen on religion, drugs, guns and impeaching George Bush

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, October 30, 2007File:Nadine Strossen 5 by David Shankbone.jpg

There are few organizations in the United States that elicit a stronger emotional response than the American Civil Liberties Union, whose stated goal is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”. Those people include gays, Nazis, women seeking abortion, gun owners, SPAM mailers and drug users. People who are often not popular with various segments of the public. The ACLU’s philosophy is not that it agrees or disagrees with any of these people and the choices that they make, but that they have personal liberties that must not be trampled upon.

In Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with the President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen, he wanted to cover some basic ground on the ACLU’s beliefs. Perhaps the area where they are most misunderstood or have their beliefs most misrepresented is their feelings about religion in the public sphere. The ACLU categorically does not want to see religion disappear from schools or in the public forum; but they do not want to see government advocacy of any particular religion. Thus, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s placement of a ten ton monument to the Ten Commandments outside the courthouse is strenuously opposed; but “Lone Ranger of the Manger” Rita Warren’s placement of nativity scenes in public parks is vigorously defended. In the interview, Strossen talks about how certain politicians and televangelists purposefully misstate the law and the ACLU’s work in order to raise funds for their campaigns.

David Shankbone’s discussion with Strossen touches upon many of the ACLU’s hot button issues: religion, Second Amendment rights, drug liberalization, “partial-birth abortion” and whether or not George W. Bush should be impeached. It may surprise the reader that many ideas people have about the most visible of America’s civil libertarian organizations are not factually correct and that the ACLU often works closely with many of the organizations people think despise its existence.

Disaster Recovery Or Business Continuity

Category : It Services

Submitted by: Paul Moore MBCI

I remember a great quote by Sir John Harvey Jones, he said

The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression

This is still the approach many customers take when it comes to Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity. However, with high profile events over the last few years, along with new legislation, many customers are driving forward with projects to protect their business should an unplanned interruption occur.

As computing power gets ever more powerful and costs keep falling, in addition to the high availability of broadband network services, the time has never been better for customers to consider tackling this critical issue; but where do they start?

Do you want a Hot Site, Warm Recovery, Cold Space? Do you want Disaster Recovery or Business Continuity? Do you want A Mobile, Static or Business Recovery Centre? What do want you cover? How quickly do you need it? (once you ve decided what it is!). Etc, etc, etc ..

No wonder the customer is confused and ends up putting the exercise off. I spoke to a customer recently who had been subscribing to a Disaster Recover service for many years, only to find that when he needed the service it failed to work! This was because they had been focusing on a Disaster Recovery service, and not Business Continuity.

So what is the difference?

Disaster Recovery services tend to focus on the provision replacement resources. These are often provided on a shared subscription basis by specialist suppliers (hardware, network connections, office space, computer rooms, voice etc.). Business Continuity is exactly what is says on the tin; Business Continuity. In other words it provides continuity of business following an unplanned interruption. But there are many areas that need to be explored before a full Business Continuity Plan can be developed and tested.

The common steps that need to be taken are shown below.

Threat Assessment The very first step on any successful Business Continuity Plan is the Threat Assessment. If you don t know what you are trying to protect yourself against how can you possibly protect yourself?

Many customers find this exercise invaluable as it also highlights risks to their business that could be reduced, or in some cases removed all together: Therefore, prevention forms a very important part of the pre-planning phase. Any areas needing improvement should also be highlighted at this stage.

Many customers identify the more obvious threats such as bombs, air crashes etc, but many ignore the less obvious, such as non-physical disasters or environmental side effects such as bomb warnings, adverse weather conditions or loss of access to the building caused by a localised incident. How many customers are aware of what risk their neighbouring business pose? Do they house combustible or toxic materials? Would they attract attention of extremist groups? Could a localised incident prevent you from accessing your facility? If so, for how long?

Business Impact Review This is when it really gets down to the true impact on the business. One of the problems of constructing a successful Business Continuity Plan is balance: What do I want, and when do I want it? It is quite simple really, the quicker you want it the more is costs! To balance this, the customer has to review the real impact on his business of an outage (loss of revenue, loss of customers, impact on share price, legal requirements, cash flow protection etc.). Even if the impact is so severe the customer will find it very difficult to re-deploy their entire workforce to a recovery facility within very short timescales. Several emergency events in London have highlighted the impact on public transport and the road system (these were so severe that some customers found that they could not get their staff to a recovery facility!). Therefore it is essential that recovery options are priorities for short, medium and long term.

Resource Requirements Now we know what we want, and when we want it, it is possible to start looking at the Disaster Recover element of Business Continuity. Remember I mentioned short, medium and long term recovery? Well, this is where Hot, Warm and Cold come into the picture.

Hot Recovery is normally available in minutes. This service would utilise a complete live replacement service, at an alternative facility, with a suitable network connection in place. This would enable customers to transfer operations to the recovery system with minimum (sometimes zero) impact to the business. The obvious disadvantage of this is the cost.

Warm Recovery Although Hot Recovery is gaining in popularity, Warm Recovery is still by far the most common solution deployed. Warm services are usually based on a shared subscription (shared risk) basis, and are available within hours of invocation. Typically it would take up to 24 hours to have the systems up and running to support the business. Warm can be provided in several ways; ship-to-site, where the equipment is loaded onto the back of a van, delivered and installed on the customers site (obviously there has to be a site to deliver it to!). If the compute room was impacted by the outage the service could be delivered in a Mobile Recovery Facility (a computer room in a lorry). And if the site is not accessible at all a remote Recovery centre could be utilised.

Cold Solutions Although less common, cold space (empty office and computer facilities) can still be attractive for the medium term. Enabling customers to recover 50% to 80% of their operation via Hot or Warm options, and relocating within a few days or weeks to a suitable location.

Business Recovery Centres – Business Recovery Centres are located around the world and can help the customer streamline resumption of normal office-related business processes following a disaster. These facilities include up to a thousand desks equipped with PCs, phones, and computer rooms. They also offer meeting/board rooms, canteen and recreational facilities and even secretarial support, along with full telephone switch and communications capabilities including PABX/ACD, ISDN,ADSL, SDSL, MPLS and other networking connections.

Now it s just a simple matter of writing the plan and testing the recovery! And of course, looking at standards such as BS 25999; but that will have to wait until my next papers.
