Most of Greek workforce participating in a general strike, say unions

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, June 24, 2005

Greek workers’ unions claim that 70 to 100% of country’s workforce has joined the general 24 hour long strike on Friday. The general strike was called by labor umbrella organizations as a show of support for striking bank employees, who are in their third week of strikes.

Private and public sector workers alike are protesting mass lay-offs, alleged age discrimination against employees, the lowering of pensions to 40% of former salary, the repudiation of collective bargaining agreements, while voicing support for the retention of the eight-hour work day.

Buses operated between 8am until 9pm, while the metro, railway, and trams did not operate at all. Administration and civil servants stopped working for three hours during the day. Banks are working with emergency personnel, causing a shortage of currency and slowing commercial and financial transactions. The president of the security guards’ union, which includes employees responsible for filling automatic teller machines estimates that most machines will run out of money sometime tomorrow.

Workers in other branches of the private sector, including shipping and tourism, also went on strike for a day. The private sector accounts for roughly half the Greek workforce, with the other half are employed in the public sector.

Independent estimates or reports on impact of the general strike are hard to find, as media workers has joined in the walkout, and broadcast news outlets did not operate at all from 1pm to 5pm.

The strikes were followed by protests in several Greek cities.

The Greek economy continues to grow, but growth has slowed since the close of the 2004 Summer Olympics and analysts had expected economic and political turmoil this summer. Greece had a high GDP growth rate prior to 2004, when it reached 4.1%. However, it is expected that for 2005, it will be around 2.7%. Additionally, a recent survey by the National Statistics Service estimates the national poverty rate to be 20%, despite recent economic progress.

A controversial proposal by New Democracy Prime Minister Costas Caramanlis would overhaul the country’s Social Security system to include bank employees, who until now have had separate pension schemes and largely oppose the merger.

Toyota’s US sales fall by 8.7%

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Toyota Motor Corporation, the Japanese automobile maker, posted an overall 8.7% drop in sales in the United States for last month. This comes after recent safety recalls of its vehicles, as well as congressional investigations over Toyota’s safety standards.

The model that had the highest drop in sales was the Camry sedan, with a 20% decline, figures released yesterday indicate.

Toyota sold a total 100,027 vehicles in the US in February, a number somewhat higher than what economic analysts predicted; they estimated a decline of ten percent.

Bob Carter, the vice president of the group’s Toyota division, commented on the figures. “I’m surprised that we sold as many vehicles as we did,” he said in a conference call, as quoted by Ninemsn. “We did see a drop in our first-time Toyota buyers. But we haven’t seen any major outflows of Toyota buyers to other brands.”

“Clearly we have some work to do. We stubbed our toe in terms of our image. There’s nothing I can come up with in terms of an incentive program to make that go away. It’s something we’re going to work on with all consumers,” the vice president added. Toyota said it would have zero per cent financing for most of its models, as well as free scheduled maintenance.

“In March, we’ll be getting back to the business of sales,” said Carter.

Meanwhile, Toyota stock increased by 2.3% at the Tokyo stock exchange to 3,390 yen in morning trading.

4 Faith Filled Decor Options You’ll Love

Submitted by: Alyssa Davis

Expressions of faith are our inspiration each day, and most of us have these wonderful boosts throughout our homes. There are many different methods of expressing what you believe in when it comes to home decor, but a few really stand out as something powerful that makes an impact on all who view it. Here are four faith-filled decor options you’ll love for your home:

Say it Simply

A simple, straightforward declaration can be the best option for any room in the home if you want to make a big impact without taking up a lot of wall space. For example, a wrought iron wall hanging that says “Faith” is very popular today, and it serves as a reminder of those things that we have faith in, such as the love of family or the support of friends. From a spiritual perspective, it also serves as a reminder of the more serious things that remind us of faith. We all have things that give us hope for the future, and it is these that we think of when we see the word faith.

Go Bold

For some people, a simple word or expression is just not enough to fill the room with the faith and purpose that religious beliefs offer. A bold, meaningful image or print can be the perfect way to decorate a room or an entire home, such as a framed landscape with an inspirational quote from an admired leader or Scripture. There are many options like this available on the Internet and in most home decor stores, with price tags that range from very inexpensive pictures to costly prints with gilded frames. You can make a big impact on people from the moment they walk into your home with this type of decor in your home, no matter where you choose to use it.

Icons and Leaders

There is no mistaking the faith and adoration associated with specific religious icons and leaders that we follow, from Jesus to Mohammed and the Pope. Icons and leaders can easily be incorporated into a room’s decor to fill the room with faith, whether you choose one of their most powerful quotes or a simple graphic representation to make the faith-filled statement. For instance, a print of Christ holding a lamb reminds us of the fact that we are all His sheep, while a powerful verse of the Koran can help us remember what is most important in life. Other ideas include quotes or images of powerful men and women of faith, such as Gandhi, Mother Theresa, former presidents and other national leaders, sports figures, and even notable actors and philanthropists.

Do it Your Way

The same things do not inspire everyone to greatness, so be sure to add faith-filled decor that speaks of your own sources of inspiration. If you cannot find the perfect finishing touch to your home then do it your way and create something on your own. You want it to be something that speaks of your faith and love, and sometimes the best approach is to design it through your own artistic vision.

Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

Category : Uncategorized

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

New Credit Score System Supposed To Simplify, Not Confuse

Category : Financial Planning

By Charles Essmeier

A lot has been written in the past few years about the importance of both credit reports and credit scores. The credit report is a listing of all significant financial transactions by a consumer and whether or not those transactions were completed on time and as agreed. The score is a distillation of everything contained on the credit report, boiled down to a three-digit number. That number is supposed to indicate to a creditor or a lender, at a glance, whether or not the consumer in question is worthy of another loan.

Until recently, the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Trans Union and Equifax, all used different but similar systems to devise the credit score, which ranged from 300 at the low end to 850 at the high end. The different systems meant that a consumer checking his or her score with each of the credit bureaus would receive three different credit scores. This led to some confusion as to which score was the “correct” one. The bureaus have recently attempted to solve that problem by creating VantageScore, a unified scoring system that all three bureaus will use. This should result in a consumer receiving the same score no matter which bureau provides it.

But this hasn’t entirely stopped the confusion over credit scoring. Unlike the old systems 300-850 range, the VantageScore uses a different scale that ranges from 501-990. In addition to the numeric score, the VantageScore system will also provide a letter grade, ranging from A-F, as follows:

901-990 – A

801-900 – B

701-800 – C

601-700 – D

501-600 – F

Now the source of the confusion has changed. Many people have erroneously assumed that a score in the old system will be transferred to the new system. That means, to their way of thinking, that a top score in the high 700s or low 80s under the old system is now merely “average” under the new one. How, people are wondering, did a top score suddenly become mediocre?

The answer, of course, is that it didn’t and that comparisons between the old system and the new one are like comparing apples with oranges. The new system is completely different and will use a new set of criteria to create the new score from the ground up. A score in the 800 range under the old system will almost certainly become a score in the 900 range under the new one. Consumers have no reason to be alarmed, and in time, the new system will be better and more easily understood than the old one. After all, nothing tells you that you have done well better than being told that you have received an “A”.

Scotland denies bail to terminally ill man convicted of Lockerbie bombing

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Scotland has refused bail to the Libyan man convicted of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 despite his terminal cancer, as he can receive treatment in prison. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi was jailed in 2001 for the 1988 bombing of the transatlantic airliner, killing 270 people, but is seeking to have his conviction overturned.

Minutes after Edinburgh’s Appeals Court rejected bail on compassionate grounds Jim Swire, spokesman for the victim’s families who lost his daughter in the disaster, complained about the ruling. “It has never been a goal of our group to seek revenge,” said a lawyer outside the court reading from his statement. “The refusal of a return to his family for a dying man whose verdict is not even yet secure looks uncomfortably like either an aspect of revenge — or perhaps timidity.”

Al-Megrahi, a former intelligence officer, is 54 and serving a minimum of 27 years for the bombing. He has advanced prostate cancer which is spreading through his body. His request for bail was rejected by Lord Hamilton, Scotland’s head judge, who said that as doctors say he could live a few more years he should not be released unless and until after his appeal succeeds or his condition worsens.

Some other doctors give his time as just months, as the cancer has reached his bones. Hamilton however said that palliative hormone treatment could prolong his life. Hamilton also said Al-Megrahi was not suffering “material pain or disability”.

The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission ruled last year that the conviction may be a miscarriage of justice. It said there was significant doubts to be raised over several key pieces of evidence in the original trial.

MMS comes to American iPhones

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, September 25, 2009

Today, after two years of waiting, American iPhone users are finally able to send and receive MMS messages. This long awaited feature has caused Apple and AT&T a great deal of grief from its user base. Originally the grief was directed at Apple for the lack of inclusion on the device, but as time progressed AT&T was faulted for lack of support.

When the iPhone was released in June of 2007, it lacked one feature that was widely available on other devices: MMS or Multimedia Messaging Service. This standard, similar to the all text SMS standard, allows users to send and receive video, audio, and picture files on their mobile phones. MMS was launched in 2002 and by 2007 was a common feature on most new mobile phones. It was not until June 2009, with the release of iPhone OS 3.0, that the devices also had the capability to send and receive these multimedia messages. Unfortunately for American iPhone users, all of whom use AT&T because of an exclusive agreement between the phone company and Apple, AT&T did not allow iPhone users to use this feature; that changed today.

Current iPhone users simply need to update (from iTunes) and reboot their device in order to enable MMS. AT&T was originally concerned about not having the network capacity to handle the data demand of all the MMS messages and in Wikinews’ own testing this seems to be a valid issue. The ability to send and receive MMS messages was functional, but by midday Friday (PST), AT&T’s network was extremely slow, with messages taking in excess of two minutes to send. Tests over AT&T’s 3G network showed upload and download speeds nearly halved what they were just a few days prior.

Advantages And Disadvantages For Internet Banking

Category : Financial Planning

By Julian Davidson

If you belong to the generation that feeds on technology then Internet banking shouldn’t at all be an issue for you. The Internet for you is the place to get things done quickly without actually going out. Banking is one of these things. For those who are a bit older, the concept of not interfacing with a human inside the bank will be a bitter pill to swallow. They still are yet to be convinced so it is necessary to weigh the advantages and disadvantages for Internet banking.

Apprehensive people know about the many wonders of the Internet and they have heard so much about Internet banking but they are still paying their bills by mail and depositing checks at their branch.

Many people are already using the Internet to shop for items, or even financial packages for mortgages and loans but when it’s time to finalize, they still opt to go to the office of the company they chose and seal things with an agent.

Before comparing the advantages and disadvantages for Internet banking, let us first define the concept so others who do not know yet can have an idea.

The What and Who in online banking

When the Internet started to become very popular and computers began to become more and more advanced, many businesses started to shift their attention to the trend and established their online presence. This same trend also started to reshape the banking industry.

In the past, banks used computers to automate their daily transactions. These days, there hardly is any paper work at all since everything is done online via the bank’s network system. The only thing that serves as a transaction record is the receipt a shopper gets when she’s at the POS of her favorite boutique.

For banks, their Internet presence is a value-added service for existing and new customers.

Online banking goes by so many other names like PC banking, home banking, electronic banking, or Internet banking.

The first ones to test the waters were the large national banks. Soon, regional banks, smaller banks, financial companies, and credit unions joined in and implemented their own electronic banking system based on the Internet. These institutions that have expanded to online have since then referred to as brick-to-click banks as opposed to brick-and-mortar banks. The latter refers to those, which are yet to offer online banking o their customers.

Aside from the brick-to-clicks, there are “virtual” banks that have emerged. These are banks that do not have physical offices or branches, and any tellers or agents. These banks exist only in cyberspace but they still are covered by the same federal regulations that cover the ordinary banks.

Nowadays, the large banks have sites that provide fully secured and fully functioning online banking services that give their customers ultimate convenience. The smaller ones which are a bit more cautious to go full circle offer access to limited banking services like viewing of account balance and history viewing only.

The more banks that go online and succeed in making their services secured, the more that people will have lesser doubts about the advantages and disadvantages for Internet banking.

London cop fired for rape despite ‘insufficient evidence’ to prosecute

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, November 19, 2010

An officer with London’s Metropolitan Police (‘the Met’) has been fired for raping a woman, despite the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) declining to prosecute after saying there was insufficient evidence to prove the offence. The CPS would have to back the case up beyond reasonable doubt before a court, but the Met’s internal hearing considered only the balance of probabilities.

The policeman, whose name was not released as he has not been charged, met the woman — who is in her early twenties — after she became unwell following a night drinking with friends at a hotel party in Russell Square. The officer took her to a nearby pub where he had been drinking; later, he said he got her a glass of water, after which she vomited. CCTV footage showed the pair embrace. They then went to St Pancras railway station, where the officer was to sleep in a police locker room before going on duty that morning.

She would later claim to have little recollection of events, but that she awoke to find herself being raped. She told police in March last year, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation. The accused man stated at interview the sex was consensual. The IPCC’s file was passed to the CPS.

Met Commander Mark Simmons said “[t]his officer acted in an intolerable way and it is only right that once such dreadful behaviour was found proven the man was dismissed from the Met.” IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said “[t]he actions of this officer will rightly appal the public as they have appalled me. His behaviour was in my view predatory and he exploited the vulnerability of a young woman. He… took her to police premises and had sex with her without her consent. … His conduct would be contemptible from anyone — from a police officer it is nothing short of despicable.” A Women Against Rape statement called the woman “…very courageous. It is very difficult to report a police officer to the force that the rapist belongs to and we know of a lot of women who are too scared to do that.” The group called the CPS’s actions “outrageous”.
