Sun Microsystems has released StarOffice 8 today. StarOffice 8 is a commercial office suite that includes word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database applications.

According to Sun, StarOffice 8 “provides excellent compatibility with Microsoft Office”. This new version improves Word, Excel and PowerPoint import and export filters, improving support for password-protected Word and Excel files and presentations with complex animations, autoshapes and slide transitions. StarOffice 8 also includes a Microsoft Office macro converter allowing many Microsoft Office macros to work in StarOffice.

StarOffice 8 is also the first commercial office suite to support the OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument). OpenDocument is an XML based file format created by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards. Massachusetts has recently announced the plan to switch to OpenDocument format. Microsoft has said it will not support the OpenDocument format.

StarOffice 8 is based on the open source OpenOffice.org project. OpenOffice.org was founded July 2000, by Sun with the release of StarOffice code under two open source licenses.

StarOffice 8 is available as a download from Sun’s Web site for $69.95, or packaged product can be ordered for $99.95. Enterprise customers can purchase StarOffice 8 for $35 (£20) per user. OpenOffice.org is available for free from openoffice.org.

Republican leaders in US want more tax relief in economic stimulus

Category : Uncategorized

Monday, January 26, 2009

As the newly inaugurated Barack Obama administration continues to push for a US$825 billion stimulus package to aid the struggling United States economy, some Republican legislators say they will not vote for such a plan without the inclusion of more tax cuts and less “unnecessary” spending.

Arizona Senator John McCain, Obama’s general election opponent and a leading voice within the Republican Party, says he would not vote for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan as it currently stands. Appearing on Fox News Sunday yesterday, McCain echoed his campaign platform in saying, “We need to make tax cuts permanent, and we need to make a commitment that there’ll be no new taxes.”

McCain and other Republicans say they are unhappy with the bill introduced in the House of Representatives, which combines roughly $550 billion in domestic spending with $275 billion in tax cuts. McCain believes not enough Republican proposals have been integrated into the plan, which he fears will result in the plan becoming “just another spending project” rather than a job creator.

“Republicans have not been brought in, to the degree that we should be in, to these negotiations and discussions. So far, as far as I can tell, no Republican proposal has been incorporated,” McCain said. “We’re losing sight of what the stimulus is all about, and that is job creation.”

The Arizona senator is known for his bipartisan efforts in Washington, D.C., but he defined his role in the new Senate as the “loyal opposition”, which does not mean “that I or my party will be a rubber stamp” for Obama, he said.

In his first weekly address since being sworn in, President Obama explained the stimulus plan in further detail, calling it a plan to “immediately jumpstart job creation as well as long-term economic growth.” He outlined several of the bill’s priorities, including the creation or salvation of up to four million jobs, as well as sweeping investments in health care, education, energy and infrastructure.

Among these investments are a new electricity grid with more than 3,000 miles of transmission lines, the weatherization of 2.5 million homes, health insurance protection for more than 8 million Americans, a renovation of over 10,000 schools, a project to repair thousands of miles of roadways, and an expansion of broadband Internet access.

Obama also laid out the rationale behind the stimulus, saying that “unprecedented action” is necessary in order to prevent further economic distress. “Our economy could fall $1 trillion short of its full capacity, which translates into more than $12,000 in lost income for a family of four,” Obama said. “In short, if we do not act boldly and swiftly, a bad situation could become dramatically worse.”

The president addressed the skepticism surrounding the stimulus package, pledging to “root out waste, inefficiency, and unnecessary spending”, while holding the government accountable for its actions. “We won’t just throw money at our problems,” Obama said. “We’ll invest in what works.”

Still, Republicans such as House Minority Leader John Boehner are skeptical of the plan’s effectiveness in rebuilding the economy. “I think a lot of Republicans will vote no because it’s a lot of wasteful Washington spending”, he commented on Meet the Press, repeating McCain’s call for less federal spending and more tax cuts.

Examples of “wasteful” spending cited by Republicans include millions of coupons to aid in the digital television transition, $200 million for new sod on the National Mall, and $360 million to fight sexually transmitted diseases, which includes funding for contraceptives. House Republicans have claimed it will take 10 years before the economy feels the effect of a stimulus, and that the combined spending of the stimulus and the financial bailouts of last year will leave future generations with over $2 trillion of debt.

In response to the stimulus plan being pushed through Congress, Boehner and Republican Whip Eric Cantor presented Obama with an alternative stimulus plan on Friday, one that relies exclusively on income and business tax cuts. “Our plan offers fast-acting tax relief, not slow-moving and wasteful government spending,” Boehner said. The counterproposal includes an income tax reduction that would save families an estimated $3,200 a year.

Despite this opposition, the stimulus bill is expected to pass through Congress by mid-February, as the Republican minority does not have enough votes to stop its approval. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed a general support of the plan at a White House meeting with Obama and other congressional leaders. “I do think we’ll be able to meet the president’s deadline of getting the package to him by mid-February,” McConnell said. The bill is expected to go before Congress for a vote on Monday, February 2.

Obama’s top economic adviser Lawrence Summers defended the stimulus plan while on Meet the Press. He said the bill was intended to balance the long-term initiatives mentioned above with the tax cuts desired by Republicans. He also said Obama was committed to spending three quarters of the stimulus money within 18 months.

Tips For Successful Custom Home Construction In Liberty, Mo

Category : Painting Services

byAlma Abell

For those who have never gone through the process of Custom Home Construction in Liberty MO, there are important things to consider before starting. Below are several pieces of advice that, when followed, will help customers build the homes of their dreams.

Set a Budget (And Stick To It)

If clients don’t set a firm budget before beginning the home-building process, they may be in for an expensive surprise. Custom homes come with nearly endless options, and adding too many features can easily drive prices sky-high. While it’s important to leave some wiggle room for unforeseen circumstances, it’s equally vital to set an upper limit so spending doesn’t get out of hand.

Secure Financing

The next step is to learn about the basic types of home financing. Temporary construction loans can be changed to mortgages at closing, and some clients can finance the construction and wait to get a mortgage. Regardless of the circumstances, clients should find the best financing for their needs.

Find the Right Contractor for the Job

Clients should look for builders whose work exemplifies the qualities looked for in a new home. Then, research and vet options by checking with the BBB and reading consumer reviews. Be on the lookout for unethical business practices, a lack of online contact information, or numerous complaints about unfinished projects.

Communicate Effectively

During the process of Custom Home Construction in Liberty MO, clients should ask questions and request frequent updates. Communication styles can make or break a project, and if there’s little to no interaction between client and builder, that builder is not likely to build to spec.

Become Part of the Home-Building Process

The best custom home builders actively seek clients’ input throughout the processes of designing and building a home, and clients should want similar things. The more involved the client is in the construction process, the more they’ll love their new home. In most cases, people build custom homes with intentions to stay there for years, and working closely with the builder simply yields better and more livable results.

Consult an Expert Home Builder

The process of building a custom home is an exciting one, but it can be difficult if clients aren’t careful. If a client has questions about the process, they can Syler Construction Inc today.

Bush attempts to reassure Americans in radio address

Category : Uncategorized

Saturday, October 11, 2008

George W. Bush, the President of the United States, has attempted to reassure Americans on the economy in his weekly radio address.

“Over the past few days, we have witnessed a startling drop in the stock market — much of it driven by uncertainty and fear,” he said, introducing the address. “Many Americans have serious concerns about their economic well-being.”

Bush then pointed out the action that the government is taking. “Here are the problems we face and the steps we are taking: First, key markets are not functioning because there is a lack of liquidity. So the Federal Reserve has injected hundreds of billions of dollars into the system. The Fed has joined with central banks around the world to coordinate a cut in interest rates — a step that should help free up credit. The Fed has also announced a new program to provide support for a vital tool that many American businesses use to finance their day-to-day operations — the commercial paper market, which is freezing up. As this program kicks in over the next week or so, it will help revive a key source of short-term financing for businesses and financial institutions.”

“Second, some Americans are concerned about whether their money is safe,” continued the president. “So the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the National Credit Union Administration have significantly expanded the amount of money insured in savings accounts and checking accounts and certificates of deposit. That means that if you have up to $250,000 in one of these insured accounts, every penny of that money is safe. The Treasury Department has also acted to restore confidence in a key element of America’s financial system by offering government insurance for money market mutual funds.”

Bush then said that there was an issue with fraud in the economy. He stated that, to address this issue, “the Securities and Exchange Commission is launching rigorous enforcement actions to detect fraud and manipulation in the market.”

    Shopping For Affordable Bedding Sets

    Submitted by: Dan Ripa

Finding affordable bedding sets without blowing your budget can be a tricky business. Some people are pros when it comes to living on a budget, while others aren’t so good at it. I know that it took me a long time to figure this thrift shopping thing out and found that the best thing for a new thrift shopper to know is, no matter where you shop for affordable bedding sets, you want to shop cheaply and find great deals that are impressive to your budget.

Let s start with the most obvious way of shopping. This would be finding a good deal from a store that is going out of business, or an annual sale you are sure to score on great quality affordable bedding sets while spending a fraction of the price. Additionally, look at stores when the sets will be transitioning at the end of a season from the thicker winter bedding sets to the light and breezy summer sets or vice verse. Transition of seasons is the best time to get affordable bedding sets from the ending season merchandise. Stores can also provide additional savings through coupons or if you sign up for their store cards, these savings sure can add up quick!

Maybe rushing around grabbing items out of other people s hands and trampling old ladies isn’t your style. Something more relaxing and at your own convenience is right up your ally. Try searching the web for affordable bedding sets. Not only can you find store brand items at a cheaper discount price online but most bedding stores provide free shipping. Shopping online for affordable bedding sets can provide numerous savings as well. Sites like Retailmenot.com can provide additional coupons to add to your savings. Other sites like Overstock.com cost a fraction of the normal price due to the over stock that stores are trying to unload from their inventory. Online shopping is a big money saver for the mellow shopper and can offer a huge variety of affordable bedding sets.

Many of us who use social media nowadays also have sites available to us that list pre-owned items as well. The most popular online shopping network is Ebay, but others like Facebook garage sale are available and very popular as well. Many of these sites will offer well cared for or brands with tags on affordable bedding sets that are more cheap and can also provide easy access to multiple styles. Many of the people on these sites are like you and me and are not looking to make a fortune but to try and sell off the extras that they have available to them. They will answer questions and be honest about any flaws in the bedding sets. These garage sale sites thankfully are not a seasonal tradition and offer affordable bedding sets all year round. No more having to wait for summer!

Another common, yet seasonal shopping method can be garage sales. Shopping garage sales are an easy way to find affordable bedding sets for pennies on the dollar. Many homes that go through remodeling or high class homes that redecorate regularly can provide a treasure chest of terrific finds. Of course you have to be weary while shopping in this method, but common sense is all you need. A little common sense will tell you if your find has been handled with care and is a good purchase or if your could be bedding is worn and not worth it. However, this method could be too risky for your blood.

If you find that you don t want to garage sale for affordable bedding sets because you never know what extra critters you could bring home; there are consignment shops or thrift stores that are very cautious as to what they take in and sell. Many people will donate their pre-loved high quality bedding sets as they are a tax write off. Many consignment shops have specials for colors or certain sale days that can add to your savings. Consignment shops have been springing up in popularity over the years and are still pulling strong as they provide a clean and economical way to shop for high quality affordable bedding sets.

All in all, there are many different ways to create a luxury look without breaking the bank. Whether you are a get out there and find it person who prefers to find a location to shop and get the best price or if you would rather shop in the comfort of your own home, there is a method of easy, low cost shopping for everyone looking for affordable bedding sets.

Wikinews interviews candidate for Cleveland mayor Arthur Kostendt

    Category : Uncategorized

    Monday, June 14, 2021

Arthur Oliver Kostendt, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Cleveland, Ohio set to take place November 2, discussed his campaign and policies with Wikinews this spring.

According to Cleveland Scene, 29-year-old Kostendt is a member of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Republican Party but has referred to his campaign as “casual”. According to his web site’s personal biography, he was a cadet for the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), scout platoon leader for the 2nd Squadron of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio Army National Guard and logistics officer for the 1st Battalion of the 145th Armored Regiment. He served in Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and assisted coalition force detachments in Southeast Asia.

Kostendt is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and summa cum laude graduate of Cleveland State University. He writes he uses an apostrophe to abbreviate his middle name as “Arthur O’Kostendt” instead of the customary period after the O to emphasise his Irish heritage.

A poll published May 5 by Baldwin Wallace University, which does not feature Mr Kostendt, has Dennis Kucinich and Basheer Jones leading in the mayoral race by 17.8 and 13.3 points, respectively, with a margin of error of up to five per cent either way. 48% of those surveyed were undecided. Incumbent mayor Frank G. Jackson, who won the 2017 Cleveland mayoral election with 59% of the vote, is eligible for a fifth term but announced on May 6 he would retire.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

    Category : Uncategorized

    Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..
